The Glenwood boys track team closed the opening day of the Iowa State Track Meet on top of the Class 3A standings.
The Rams lead all Class 3A teams with 24 team points. Sioux City Heelan comes in after the opening round with 20 team points for second place.
Glenwood's day was highlighted by the gold medal-winning run by Johnny Fuller in the 3,200-meters. Fuller, who had yet to win gold at state in three previous tries, bested second place Ryan McMahon of Algona with a time 9:17.10.
The Rams nearly had a second gold on the day but the 4x800-meter relay team of Eliot Lincoln, Jared Cook, Mark Abrams and Kyle Wheeler was edged by Spirit Lake Park and its state record time of 7:49.07. Glenwood placed second with a time of 7:57.10.
Wheeler added to the first round success in the 400-meters with a third place medal.
The boys shuttle hurdle relay team also ran the second fastest time in the preliminaries to advance to Saturday's finals.
The Glenwood girls ended day one with zero teams points after an 18th place finish by the 4x800-meter relay and a 13th place finish by their shuttle hurdle relay teams.
The Glenwood boys and girls resume action at the state track meet on Friday at 9 a.m.
