Nine Knights punch tickets to state track

TABOR - The Fremont-Mills girls and boys track teams combined to punch nine tickets to the Iowa State Track Meet at Friday’s state qualifying meet on the Knights’ own track in Tabor.

The Fremont-Mills girls squad was second in the team standings to regional champion Logan-Magnolia. Council Bluffs St. Albert, the defending Class 1A state champions, won the boys district crown with 146 points. The Knights placed third on the boys side with 80 points.

The East Mills girls were ninth with 24 points while the Wolverine boys finished 10th with 22 points.

The Iowa State Track and Field Championships begin Thursday in Des Moines and run through Saturday. Class 1A competition commences Thursday at 2 p.m.

The Fremont-Mills boys qualified for state in five events. The Knights’ shuttle hurdle relay team of James Switzer, Seth Malcom, Colton Hauschild and Austin Gartner won gold and the automatic state bid with a time of 1:06.25.
Switzer added a bid in the 400-meter hurdles.

In the field events, Connor Alley qualified in both the shot and the discus and Jaeger Power in the long jump.

“We are very excited for all six boys that made the state meet,” said Fremont-Mills boys track coach Mike Wood. “A year ago we were only able to get two athletes to the state meet, so I’m very happy to be able to take these great track athletes to the 2019 Meet.”

On the girls side, the Knights’ shuttle hurdle relay team of McKayla Gartner, Kenna Howard, Lydia Alley, Kendall Reed won gold in Tabor to punch their ticket to state. Alley also earned a spot in the long jump.
Kendra Fichter punched tickets in both the shot and discus and teammate Sophie Phillips is a discus qualifier.

“The kids in all state qualifying events had season best in their events which was exciting,” said Fremont-Mills girls coach Kyle Fichter. “Getting back to the state track meet for their senior year was also exciting for Kendra Fichter, Sophie Phillips, and McKayla Gartner. McKayla and Sophie have been all four years.”
