Glenwood placed fifth at the West Des Moines Valley Invitational on Saturday.
The host Tigers took home the team title with 251.5 points. Indianola was second with 210. The Rams’ 135 points were four points behind fourth place Winterset.

“Overall I was not very pleased with how we performed at Valley,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “We didn’t look like the same team that wrestled the past two weeks. Most of the guys on the team were not very consistent. We would look good one match and then look poor another match.
“The teams at Valley were all good teams.  This was probably some of the better competition that we have seen so far this year.  Things will only get tougher as the season goes on.”
Senior Jon Williams (171 pounds) was the Rams’ lone tournament champion at Valley. Josh Clark (140 pounds) added a second-place finish and Sam Jameson (112), Seth Warren (125) and Alex Reinert (160) added third place finishes.
“Warren, Clark, Reinert, and Williams all wrestled very well,” said Dyer. “Seth Warren is not flashy but he keeps going hard the whole match.  He is a gritty wrestler that just keeps working hard.  Josh Clark was real close to winning the tournament and for a freshman that’s a big thing.  Alex Reinert lost in the semi finals and looked real good in the backside.  Williams looked   pretty good throughout the whole tournament.  He had a tough match in the finals and did a good job staying in his best position and scoring points.”
After those four place winners, Dyer didn’t see the fire nor the consistency he needs from his team going forward.
“We have to be more consistant or we are going to have these struggles all year,” said Dyer. “We have to learn from our mistakes and get better.  We cannot have the same mistakes each week and win. Whether it’s a weight issue or a technique issue we have to fix things or we are going to be up and down all year”

Rams sweep duals
The Glenwood wrestling team improved to 4-0 in duals this season with a pair of dominating wins at home on Thursday.
Glenwood rolled over Shenandoah 57-15 before downing Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 61-16 in the capper. The Rams lost just four matches and recorded a total of 14 pins in the two duals.
“It was nice being at home and getting two wins in front of our home fans,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “We don’t have a lot of home meets this year so it was nice to have those wins at home.”
Senior 103-pounder Billy Lucy recorded two pins, as did Steve Gutschenritter (135 pounds), Zach Magnussen (145), Alex Reinert (160) and Jon Williams (171).
“Shenandoah and A.L. are rebuilding and they struggled with our line-up,” said Dyer. “I thought the guys wrestled pretty well, but its hard to gauge where everyone is at using these duals.  Both teams are rebuilding and they had some guys that didn’t have a lot of experience wrestling, so its hard to see what we need to improve on using those duals.”
