The East Mills boys basketball team held their second straight opponent to abysmal shooting and fewer than 40 points in a 64-31 victory over Clarinda Academy Friday in Clarinda.

The Wolverines, who improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, held the Eagles to 14 first half point while taking a 26-14 lead into intermission. The third quarter would see that lead balloon to 50-20 by the end of the frame.

“I thought we out-played them in the first half but we only led by 12 and with how athletic they are, that definitely wasn’t a very safe lead,” said East Mills coach Kevin Schafer. “We got some easy buckets in the third quarter, some kick-outs, and we shared ball so much better than we did against Diagonal (Thursday night). We looked much more like a team and it definitely showed.”

Defensively, Schafer admits his team will see better offensive teams but he liked what they got done on that end of the court. The Wolverines finished with nine steals.

“For the most part, we were happy with our defense,” he said. “We play ed some really good offenses this week so we’ll see how good we are. But we were good on defense against the Academy. We’ll get a better picture of how good we are this week.”

Pedro Rogozzo led East Mills in scoring for the second straight game to open the season. The 6-foot-5 Brazilian foreign exchange student scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

“He shoots a little quick sometimes but when he takes his time, he’s a good shooter,” Schafer said. “We want him to focus a little more on defense and rebounding. He wants to leak out fast breaks a little too much. For two early games, and being a little nervous in the first half against Diagonal, he’s played pretty well.”

Anthony Rainey chipped in 13, Michael Schafer 15 and Trevor Glockel nine for the Wolverines.
