Bird Flu Meeting In Malvern Tuesday Night

Mills County officials are hosting an educational opportunity for area residents to learn more about Avian Flu and the disposal plan for affected birds.  The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 26, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the East Mills Community School, 1505 East 15th St. in Malvern.

Subject matter experts from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEMD), and Mills County Public Health will be present to share information and address concerns.  Representatives from the Loess Hills Sanitary Landfill and local county departments will also be available.

“We certainly understand that our residents are concerned about the plan to bring these birds to our local landfill, said Sheri Bowen, Public Information Officer for Mills County.  The safety of our community is essential and this is a great opportunity for all of us to learn more about the disposal process and to have our questions answered.”

Information has been posted to the Mills County Website at birdflu.millscoia.us and includes links to state and national sites as well as the DNR protocol for landfill disposal of these birds.  The Mills County Emergency Management Facebook Page also provides information.  Concerns can also be addressed through a State-wide 24/7 Concern Hotline at 1-800-447-1985.  If you need additional information about this event, contact Sheri Bowen at 712-527-0137 or by email at sherib@mcph.us
