  • Clark, Malcom earn first state...

DES MOINES – Josh Clark and Matt Malcom both earned their first wins at state but the Glenwood wrestling team missed out on a medal for the third straight season at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines last weekend.
Bettendorf edged 2013 champion Southeast Polk for the traditional state team title by just four points in the team standings.

  • Rams roll in districts with 79-...

ATLANTIC - Jacob Lewis and Corey Bertini combined for 38 points and Glenwood opened the game on a 21-5 run in a very business-like 79-36 dismantling of Winterset Monday night in the Class 3A, District 16 opening round in Atlantic.

“I felt good with our approach and focus tonight,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte after the game. “We set the tone early that first quarter and maintained that for 32 minutes.”

  • Viqueens too much for Knights in...

RED OAK – Carmen Subbert scored 27 points to lead Stanton past Fremont-Mills 52-29 in the Class 1A girls regional girls basketball final Friday in Red Oak.

Subbert’s 27 points came on 11-of-19 shooting. The senior added seven rebounds and three blocks to put the Viqueens in the regional finals and one game from a state tournament bid.

“It feels good,” Subbert said after the game. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been to the finals. Just to get this far is a great accomplishment.”

  • Titans ends Rams’ season in...

Council Bluffs Lewis Central girls basketball used a 13-5 third quarter run to pull away in a tightly contested Class 4A Region 8 38-32 semifinal victory over Glenwood in Council Bluffs Saturday.

“It was a tight game all the way and very low scoring,” Glenwood coach Barry Loeffelbein said. “There was some good defense; neither of us could make shots and they got hot in the second quarter. We came back a bit but we couldn’t get shots to fall.”

  • Howell earns win at state

The East Mills wresting team placed 69th at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament last weekend.

The Wolverines got a consolation round victory by heavyweight David Howell for their three team points. East Mills tied with Alta-Aurelia, Northrund Kensett, Sigourney-Keota, Southwest Iowa, Wayne-Corydon and West Sioux for 69th place.

“I felt like we wrestled pretty well,” said East Mills coach Claude Lang. “Every match we wrestled was really close. We were one move away from winning just about every match.”

  • Rams' Malcom, Clark advance...

The Iowa State Wrestling Tournament got underway at Wells Fargo Arena today with a pair of Glenwood wrestlers advancing to tomorrow’s second round.

The Rams’ 132-pound Matt Malcom scored a 13-0 major decision over Jakeb Bakken of Iowa City West in the opening round.

Josh Clark, a first time state qualifier, earned the Rams’ second win of the day when he won a 15-9 decision over Johnston’s Nathaniel Standish.

  • Rams send four to state

Glenwood - Matt Malcom stunned Sioux City North’s No. 8 ranked Dalton Hanson with a first period pin and the Glenwood wrestlers edged Sioux City East for the team title at the Class 3A, District 5 meet.

Glenwood narrowly edged East 187 to 184.5. Council Bluffs Lewis Central was third in the team standings with 165 points.

  • Glenwood can’t get by Cyclones

In a basketball game, a 14-point lead may not seem all that different from an 11-point lead. But in the momentum game, that extra three points makes all the difference.

Luke Hall’s three pointer at the third quarter buzzer handed Harlan a 47-33 lead and all the momentum heading into the fourth quarter  as the Cyclones downed Glenwood  66-55 in Hawkeye 10 Conference basketball Friday.

  • Wolverines win sectional, send...

The East Mills wrestling team had seven district qualifiers and claimed the school’s first ever sectional title at the Class 1A sectional Saturday in Audubon.

The Wolverines 216 team points edged the host Wheelers by 11 points.  The sectional win qualified East Mills for a regional team duals final back in Audubon against Logan-Magnolia. The winner will advance to next week’s state duals in Des Moines.

  • Wolverines run win streak to 13

Five players scored in double-figures and the East Mills boys basketball team won its 13th game in a row with a 75-48 victory over Fremont-Mills.

“Easily our best offensive game of the year,” East Mills coach Kevin Schafer said after the game. “We shot better than we have all season and everybody got involved. It was just one of those games.”

The Wolverines led 40-24 at the half and shot 53.9 percent from the field (34-of-63) for the game.
