  • Glenwood drops third straight

    “It’s been a tough week for us,” is how Glenwood coach Curt Schulte summed up his team’s week, following its third straight loss, a 66-41 setback to Atlantic on Saturday.

    “We knew this would be a tough few games,” said Schulte, whose team has lost three in a row all to ranked opponents to drop to 9-11 overall and 9-8 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. “But they (Atlantic) played real well and they played better than we did.”

  • Schafer’s 20 leads...

    Luke Schafer scored 20 points and A.J. Westover 16 for the East Mills boys basketball team in a 73-66 victory over Riverside on Friday.

    The Wolverines (12-8) outscored Riverside 44-34 after halftime.

    Jake Doyle added 14 and Jake Bolton 15 points and 16 rebounds for East Mills.

    Essex 46

    The East Mills boys basketball team didn’t exactly shoot the lights out, but it did enough with its trapping zone and clutch shooting in a 19-4 second-quarter spurt to defeat Essex 59-46 last Tuesday.

  • Third quarter run carries...

    The Glenwood girls basketball team outscored Atlantic 13-2 in the third quarter to pull away for a 56-43 victory on Saturday.

    “That was pretty big for us,” said Glenwood coach Leon Portrey of the decisive third quarter run. “Our defense picked up, our offense played good and Tori (Kruse) hit a couple of three’s that were big.”

    Kruse led the Rams (11-10 overall, 8-10 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) with 17 points, hitting four three pointers, and grabbing five rebounds.

  • White, Bryan crowned at Hawk-10...

    RED OAK - Colin White and Joey Bryan each won conference titles and Glenwood placed third at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Wrestling Tournament in Red Oak on Saturday.

    Council Bluffs Lewis Central, which won six individual titles, was the conference champion with 239 team points. Atlantic was second with 188 followed by Glenwood’s 163.5 team points.

    The Rams advanced three wrestlers to the finals on Saturday with White and Bryan each coming away with their first conference titles. Glenwood did not win an individual title last year’s conference tournament.

  • Westover free throws lift

    A pair of A.J. Westover free throws with :06 on the clock was the difference for the East Mills boys basketball team in a 59-57 victory over Clarinda Academy on Friday.

    Westover, who led three Wolverines in double-figures with 22 points, hit 8-of-9 free throws in the win and grabbed five steals.

    Jake Doyle added 14 points and Luke Schafer 12 for East Mills.

    Angelo Kennedy led Clarinda Academy with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

  • Glenwood girls roll to

    Tori Kruse led five players in double-figures with 18 points for the Glenwood girls in a 97-35 Hawkeye 10 victory over Shenandoah on Friday.

    The Rams (6-9 overall, 4-9 in the conference) opened the game on a 17-4 run en route to a 51-26 halftime lead.

    Glenwood shot a season-high 60 percent from the field and connected on 12-of-20 three pointers. The Rams 97 points were its most in a five-person basketball game, smashing the old school record of 74 points set in 1993.

  • Wildcats no match for Knights in...

    Thomas Ware led four players in double-figures with 15 points for the Fremont-Mills boys basketball team in an 80-44 Corner Conference victory over Hamburg on Friday.

    The Knights shot 46.4 percent from the field (26-of-56) and 21-of-41 from the free throw line.

    Ryan Menicucci pitched in with 14 points and Dylan Miller and Nate Meier each added 10 points and six rebounds.

  • Wolverines earn second win of...

    The East Mills girls sprinted out to a 30-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 70-18 Corner Conference victory over Clarinda Academy on Friday.

    The Wolverines (2-14 overall, 1-7 in the conference) shot a season-best 58.5 percent from the field (31-of-53) and a held a 27-18 rebounding edge over the Eagles. East Mills also had just five turnovers compared to the Eagles 29.

  • Essex rolls over Fremont-Mills

    Essex outscored the Fremont-Mills girls basketball team 20-6 in the fourth quarter in a 66-41 victory on Friday.

    The Knights (5-7 overall, 2-3 in the Corner Conference) were led by Lauren Alley’s 12 points. Jessica Donahue added 10 and Lynde Madison nine.

    Jocelyn Coleman and Emily Wendstrand led Essex with 22 and 25 points each, respectively.

  • Kuemper runs past Rams

    State ranked No. 6 Kuemper Catholic’s depth and quickness was too much for the Glenwood girls in a 75-34 Hawkeye 10 Conference victory on Friday.

    The Knights (12-1) forced 18 first-half turnovers by the Rams and jumped out to a 23-9 first-quarter lead in the win.
