    The Glenwood girls track and field team opened the 2010 season on March 20 at the Wayne State College Indoor Meet in Wayne, Neb.

    Glenwood coach Brad Rasmussen thought his team competed well and turned in some great performance for the first meet of the year.

  • Wolverine boys, girls ninth at...

    The East Mills girls and boys track teams competed in the Bruce Jenner Indoor Invitational in Limoni on Saturday.

    Both the girls and the boys placed ninth in the team standings at the indoor event held on the campus of Graceland College.

    The boys were led by the gold medal run of Jake Bolton who topped the field in the 200-meters with a time of 24.36.

    The Wolverines distance medley relay team of Nick Pittmon, Bolton, Luke Schafer and Jake Doyle placed fourth with a time of 4:12.69.

    Pittmon added a fifth place individual finish in the 55-meter dash.

    MALVERN - After storming through the Corner Conference with a near perfect record and winning its first ever conference tournament title the East Mills boys basketball team did something it hadn't done in 39 days last Tuesday.

    They lost.

    Council Bluffs St. Albert used a stifling, aggressive full-court defense to hold the Wolverines without a basket the final six minutes of the game and end their 12-game winning streak in a 60-43 victory to advance to the Class 1A, District 16 championship.

    ADEL – A-D-M hit 7-of-9 free throws down the stretch to pull away from Glenwood for a 69-60 Class 3A, District 15 victory over the Rams last Monday.

    The loss ends the Rams' season with a record of 11-11, including a 10-8 record in the Hawkeye 10 Conference.

    “It was a great ball game, a great district game between two pretty evenly matched teams,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte of his team's season ending loss. “I was proud of the kids. They came to play after a two hour bus ride. And it was really a back and forth game.”

    DES MOINES - Glenwood's Colin White placed third and Tyler Maxwell eighth as the Rams earned a 17th place team showing at the Iowa State Wrestling Meet in Des Moines.

    Waverly-Shell Rock ran away with the Class 3A team title with four individual state champions to easily out distance second place Bettendorf 163 to 138. Urbandale, coached by former Glenwood state champion Mike Moreno, was third with 101 points.

    HARLAN - The Glenwood girls basketball dream season came to an end on Saturday in a 69-44 loss to Harlan in the Class 3A, Region 8 semifinals.

    The Hawkeye 10 Conference champion Cyclones (21-2) used a 15-0 first-quarter run to seize control and a 9-0 run to close out the half to put the upstart Rams away.

    Taylor Kaufman hit a free throw with 3.4 seconds left to break a 60-60 tie in overtime to give the Glenwood boys basketball team a 61-60 upset victory of Council Bluffs Lewis Central on Thursday.

    “We’ve had some good wins in my four years, but this was probably one of the biggest in the program’s history,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte of his team’s win over the Class 4A Titans who had already sealed up the Hawkeye 10 Conference title. “This was a great win for the school and the community.”

    MALVERN - Nursing a one-point lead with just over a minute remaining in the East Mills team Class 1A district opener against Riverside on Thursday, basketball coach Kevin Schafer went to an old bag of tricks.

    Following a timeout, and leading 43-42 with the ball, the Wolverines came out in an old school, three-man, dribble weave on offense that Schafer hadn’t used all year.

    “We weren’t going to shoot unless we had a layup,” said Schafer.

    With one day down at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament the Glenwood wrestling team has all four of its state qualifiers still wrestling heading into day two.

    Bettendorf is the team leader after day one with 35 points. Waverly-Shell Rock is second with 26 points and Indianola is third with 25 points.

    Glenwood is tied for 32nd with four team points.
