COUNCIL BLUFFS – Glenwood’s season-opening football game against St. Albert at Al Leber Field Friday night turned out to be a tale of two halves.

The Rams held their own for the first two quarters of the game, outplaying the perennial Class 1A powerhouse on their way to a 6-0 halftime lead.

The second half of the game, however, was a much different story. The Falcons scored 24 unanswered points after halftime before pulling away to a 31-12 victory.

The East Mills football team exploded for 36 second quarter points to blow open a 6-6 ballgame en route to a 50-14 victory over Woodbine in a non-conference eight-man match up on Friday.

“That first quarter was pretty tough,” said Irwin, whose team was deadlocked at 6-6 with the Tigers heading into the decisive second quarter. “Then in that second quarter we just sort of exploded and kind of created some celebration at that point in the game. It was a very good night for us passing but part of that was because we were able to get the running game going.”

The Glenwood football team opens its 2009 season on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. game against Council Bluffs St. Albert at Al Leber Field.

The Rams, 3-6 a year ago, return 12 letterwinners from a team that lost on a 24-yard field goal with :09 left on the clock to the Falcons last season. St. Albert finished last season in the state playoff quarterfinals with a 28-21 loss to West Lyon in a 9-2 season.

As a runner in the 110m hurdles stands in the starting line of a world championship race, there is a lot going through his mind.

They must stay stretched and warm. They must explode out of the starting blocks as quickly as possible to get a great start. They envision staying low to the hurdles while keeping their timing as they land and prepare for the next.

Mike Godbout, a Red Oak High School graduate who calls Glenwood home, had that focus Aug. 6, when he ran for the United States track team, and won the gold.
