  • Wolverines stop Walnut, 66-45

        Luke Schafer scored a game-high 31 points to lead East Mills to a 65-45 victory over Walnut in the Class 1A, District 1 quarterfinals on Thursday.
        The Wolverines (18-4) blew open the game with a 17-7 second-quarter run and put the Warriors away on a 21-10 third-quarter run.
        East Mills limited Walnut to 31.5 percent (17-of-54) shooting and held a 37 to 22 rebounding edge.

        TABOR - Fremont-Mills kept pulling away and Sydney kept coming back.
        The Knights hit four free throws in the final 1:21 and held Sydney to just two points over the final four minutes to pull away for good in a 36-31 Class 1A, Region 8 basketball victory on Thursday.
        The Knights trailed 12-9 after a quarter but opened the second-quarter on a 9-0 run to get ahead 18-12. The lead was trimmed to 18-17 at the half in a process that would repeat itself throughout the second half.

        The Glenwood wrestling team will send four wrestlers to this week’s Iowa State Wrestling Tournament and all four are unranked.
        And that’s just the way Ram head coach Brad Asche likes it.
        “We like being the underdog. The surprise,” the coach said. “We’re the underdog right away because all four of our kids didn’t place first in the district and playing kids who won their districts. So we look to surprise some people.”

  • Glenwood grapplers fifth at...

        The Glenwood wrestling team placed fifth at the Hawkeye 10 Conference wrestling meet on  Saturday at Clarinda.
        Creston crowned five individual champions to rack up 241.5 points and win its first Hawkeye 10 title since 1988. Atlantic was the runner up with 226.5 points. Council Bluffs Lewis Central, which had won five straight conference titles entering this year’s tournament, finished third with 174 points.
        Glenwood had two wrestlers reach the finals and placed fifth as  team with 131.5 points.
