Baseball Preview

The Glenwood baseball team returns nine of its top 10 hitters and four pitchers that won at least three games.

Yet, that wealth of experience isn’t offering head coach Brett Elam the comfort level one might think.

The Rams committed 95 errors in 35 games a year ago, nearly three per game.

Elam has made it clear to his team, to play championship level baseball that can’t continue.

That’s the word Glenwood softball coach Tim Stanton used to describe his 2013 squad.

“I think we’ll have several kids that are standout players and when you have that many kids standout, nobody is standing out,” he said. “I think we have a lot of good players and good hitters. I don’t think this going to be ‘Glenwood has this person,’ it’s going to be ‘Glenwood has a team.’”

Mary Beth LaRue and Matthew Aporta were united in marriage April 6, 2013, at the historic Santa Margarita Ranch in Santa Margarita, Calif. The ceremony was officiated by David Lynch.

    The bride is the daughter of Dick and Linda LaRue of Glenwood. The groom is the son of John Aporta and Micael Tsavaris of New York, N.Y.
    John LaRue, brother of the bride, served as the man of honor. Two of the bridesmaids were Blaire Winum Schnebel and Ashley Turner of Glenwood.

Mother, Teacher, Blogger

A Glenwood preschool teacher and single mother of two children is making a name for herself as a blogger for a San Francisco-based website geared toward issues of interest to women.

“The website is Lipstick and Politics and I’m not the lipstick” Bobbi Jo Rohrberg said during a recent interview.

“I’m not into fashion and entertainment. The politics is what I like most, but I’m also a single mom who’s been through divorce so I also like to write things for co-parenting and general parenting.”

Mustangs nip Rams, 5-4 in tennis

The Glenwood boys tennis team lost a  close 5-4 decision to Shenandoah last Wednesday in a match played indoors at the Montgomery County YMCA in Red Oak due to weather conditions.  

Rams’ No. 1 player Joe Gunkelman played his most consistent game of the season against the Fillies’ Jacob Holmes at the No. 1 singles spot but fell 10-6 to the senior.

Max Chavez and Cole Peckham continued their winning streaks beating their opponents 10-7 and 10-3, respectively.  

Moms at Home, Moms at Work

  Mother.  
  The woman who traditionally bakes cookies, bandages boo-boos, tells her kids to pick up their bedrooms and so much more.  Many people mature, leave home and then see their parents occasionally.
  The three mothers in this story all have their daughters beside them in the workplace. The three daughters are all very grateful to have their mothers there, learning life’s lessons – even as adults.

Preschool Teacher Wins Lakin Award

Northeast Elementary preschool teacher Liz Jensen is one of two recipients of the prestigious Charles E. Lakin Outstanding Teacher Award for 2013.

A surprised Jensen was presented the award Monday afternoon at an all-school assembly in the school gymnasium.
