  • Traffic Island Causes Concern

    It was constructed with public safety in mind, but a concrete island placed in the middle of the road near Glenwood’s new high school has proven to be a potential hazard for several motorists.

    A divided highway sign at the north end of the island has been knocked down and replaced at least four times already this summer, according to Glenwood Public Works Director Perry Cook.

    Tori Bowden of Glenwood and Kyle Bruno have announced their engagement and approaching wedding.

    The bride-elect is the daughter of Mike and Stephanie Bowden of Glenwood. She’s attended Iowa Western Community College and is employed as an assistant teacher with the Glenwood Community School District and as a server with Outback Steakhouse.

    Her fiance is the son of Salavatore and Edith Bruno of Council Bluffs. He’s also attended Iowa Western Community College and is employed by CLC Electrical.

    Tori Bowden of Glenwood and Kyle Bruno have announced their engagement and approaching wedding.

    A decade ago the Animal Relief Fund for a Shelter, dubbed ARFS, started by a group of Mills county residents concerned about the welfare of stray dogs and cats in the shelterless county, hatched a plan to cure the problem.

    On Monday, that plan came to fruition as the shelter, now called the Loess Hills Humane Society (LHHS) opened its doors to Mills County strays at a state-of-the art, 6,000 square foot facility on 2.5 acres of land south of Pacific Junction on 221st Street.

    There’s only room for three of them, but seven Glenwood-area residents want to serve on the Glenwood Board of Education.

    The Mills County Auditor’s Office confirmed Friday that the seven candidates have filed the necessary paperwork to have their names on the ballot for the Sept. 8 election. School board seats currently occupied by Bill Agan, David Warren and Frank Overhue are up for election this year. All seats on the board are now elected at-large.

    John Jens and Donna and Richard Dickeson, all of Glenwood, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Michelle Jens, to Steven Sprague, son of Dr. Terry and Mary Jane Sprague of Audubon.

    The bride-to-be is a 1997 graduate of Glenwood Community High School and a 2001 graduate of Iowa State University with a bachelor of science degree in animal science. She graduated from ISU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. Dr. Jens is a partner and practicing veterinarian at Audubon-Manning Veterinary Clinic (AMVC) in Audubon.
