  • White places sixth at state tourney

    DES MOINES - Glenwood’s Colin White placed sixth at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.

    Waverly-Shell Rock was the Class 3A team champion with 146.5 points. Iowa City West was second with 138.5 points.

    Glenwood’s 11 team points placed them 35th in a four-way tie with Harlan, Mason City and Sioux City East.

  • Wolverines advance to semis with 60-44 win

    MALVERN - In a near reversal of their eight-person match up on the football field last fall won by Cumberland-Anita-Messina 60-44, the East Mills basketball team ran away from the Cougars for a 60-46 Class 1A, District 15 victory.

    The Wolverines (12-7) forced turnovers on six of CAM’s first nine possessions and opened the game on a 10-2 run. East Mills coach Kevin Schafer felt his team’s quickness and early defensive pressure was the difference against the bigger Cougars.

  • Red hot Lewis Central too much for Glenwood

    COUNCIL BLUFFS - Council Bluffs Lewis Central shot a blistering 61 percent from the field and outscored Glenwood 50-22 over the second and third quarters in a 79-42 Hawkeye 10 Conference victory last Tuesday.

    “They really shot it well,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte, whose team dropped its fifth straight game to end the regular season. “They got running on all cylinders and shot 61 percent for the game. Once they started hitting like that we’d have a hand in their face on defense and they’d still knock it down.”

  • Cyclones storm past Rams 50-40 in district semifinals

    The Glenwood girls basketball team’s season ended in the Class 3A, Region 2 semifinals on Saturday with a 50-40 loss to Harlan.

    “We played pretty well, we took pretty good care of the ball, better than we had, but we just didn’t rebound well enough,” said Glenwood coach Leon Portrey.

    The Rams were outrebounded by 30-20 on the night.

  • Cowgirls end Knights’ season

    The Sidney girls basketball team built a 24-12 halftime lead en route to a 47-32 Class 1A Region 3 district basketball victory over Fremont-Mill last Tuesday.

    The Knights had 20 turnovers to the Cowgirls’ 23 but Sidney held a 43-31 rebounding edge in a cold shooting night for both teams. Fremont-Mills shot just 29.5 percent (13-of-44) from the field and 6-of-15 at the line. The Cowgirls shot slightly better at 36.6 percent (20-of-55).

    Jessica Donahue led the Knights with 12 points and nine rebounds. Amy Carlson added nine points.

  • Brehm steps down as Glenwood volleyball coach

    Kim Brehm has resigned from her position as Glenwood Community High School volleyball coach.

    Brehm, who has taught geometry and pre-algebra at the high school for four years and served as head volleybally coach for two, handed in her resignation to the district on Feb. 25.

    Brehm, an Elkhorn, Neb. native, has not decided if she will continue on as a teacher at Glenwood next year but is consdering a move back to the Omaha area.

  • Albert asked to resign as Glenwood football coach

    Glenwood football coach Brian Albert has been asked to resign the coaching position he has held since 2003, said the coach.

    Albert confirmed in an interview last Thursday that he was asked to resign by Glenwood Activities Director Scott Arkfeld at a meeting following last fall’s football season.

    “They said they wanted to go in a different direction,” said Albert of his conversation with Arkfeld.

    When asked if he declined the district’s request to resign, Albert replied: “Absolutely.”
