  • Ram defense tames Mustangs

    The Glenwood boys basketball team held Shenandoah to just two points combined in the second and third quarters en route to a 57-29 Hawkeye 10 Conference victory on Friday.

    The Rams (8-7 overall, 8-5 in the conference) held the Mustangs to 9-of-40 shooting from the field (22.5 percent) and forced 15 turnovers. Glenwood also held a 40-24 rebounding edge.

  • Knights run away from Wildcats

    TABOR - The Fremont-Mills girls basketball team used a 17-5 run over the final 4:12 of the first half to run away from Hamburg in a 57-39 victory on Friday.

    The Knights used its pressure defense to force 18 turnovers and confuse the Wildcat offense.

    “We ran a little bit of a zone defense tonight,” said Fremont-Mills coach Rod Williams after the game. “We mixed things up a little bit and I think that gave them some problems on offense.”

    Those problems and the resulting turnovers led to a steady diet of fast break points for the Knights.

  • Rams send three to state

    HARLAN - Tyler Maxwell, Joey Bryan and Colin White advanced to the state tournament and the Glenwood wrestling team placed third at the Class 3A District wrestling meet at Harlan on Saturday.

    West Des Moines Valley was the district champion, topping runner-up Council Bluffs Lewis Central 247 to 199.5 points. Valley had eight state qualifiers, including six champions. The Titans won three weight classes, and advanced eight to state.

    The Rams finished with 147.5 team points and had state tickets punched for Maxwell at 130 pounds, Bryan at 171 and White at 285.

  • Rams’ season ends in district opener

    Nearly 40 fouls and 45 free throws.

    Not exactly the picture of pretty basketball but it was exactly the kind of tough, defensive-minded game Glenwood coach Curt Schulte envisioned in his team’s Class 3A, District 15 match up with Creston, who split a pair of games with the Rams this season.

    Unfortunately the Rams’ offense got out of sync early with foul trouble to leading scorer Robby King and never seemed to recover in a 56-39 loss last Monday.

  • Friday Fire Leaves Emerson Family Without A Home

    EMERSON - An investigator from the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office was scheduled to be in Emerson Monday morning to examine the scene of a fire that gutted a private residence on Friday and caused significant property damage.

    Firefighters from Emerson, Hastings and Red Oak responded to a report of fire at 512 Bartlett St. shortly before 11:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they encountered a multi-story home engulfed in smoke and flames.
