  • Hawkeye 10 Honors

    Four of the 20 members of the Hawkeye 10 Conference All-Academic Team are students at Glenwood Community High School.

    Alexa Bledsoe, Annaleah Herrman, Jonathan Schoening and Nicole Sowers were recognized as members of the team at a banquet in Atlantic on April 8.

    Ms. Bledsoe is the vice president of the National Honor Society, captain of the tennis team, an individual speech participant and a member of the Reach/SADD Advisory Council. She plans to study architectural engineering at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

  • Historic Day For Same-sex Couples

    On July 16, 1988, June Focken and Carol McCormick professed their love and commitment to one another in a ceremony performed by a minister from the Metropolitan Community Church of Omaha. After the ceremony, Focken and McCormick were presented with a certificate of holy union, a document that signified their bond, but carried absolutely no weight in the eyes of the law.

  • Fremont-Mills ends Wolverines’ season

    Jessica Donahue and Amy Carlson combined for 33 points for the Fremont-Mills girls basketball team in a 51-39 victory over East Mills in the opening round of Region 3, Class 1A districts at Malvern on Thursday.

    The two teams, who played twice in the regular season with the Knights winning both, played even for most of the first three quarters until Fremont-Mills extended its lead to 33-26 heading into the final quarter.

    In the fourth quarter, the Knights pulled away with a 18-13 run.

  • Kruse, Lucy named to Hawk-10 second team

    Glenwood’s Morgan Lucy and Tori Kruse have been selected as second team members of the 2008-2009 Hawkeye 10 Girls Basketball All-Conference Team in a vote of conference coaches.

    Lucy, a freshman, led the Rams in scoring (10.5 points per game) and rebounds (10.6 per game). Her 235 total rebounds this season ranked second in the conference.

    Kruse, a senior, shot 40.3 percent from behind the arc (54-of-134) and scored 9.6 points per game.

    The Rams’ Tabi Evans was an honorable mention selection.

  • Happy birthday, Glenwood Booster Club

    As the Glenwood Booster Club prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Pat Ross, the booster’s club first president that many years ago, can still recall the very first purchase the fledgling club made in 1984.

    The 10-station, Universal Dynamic Variable Resistance weight machine cost $6,515, it required Glenwood Transit to ship all the way from Cedar Rapids and filled about a quarter of the weight room.

    But that complex piece of machinery isn’t really what Ross recalls most. How the club paid for it still makes Ross chuckle more than two decades later.

  • Portrey steps down as Ram girls coach

    Leon Portrey turned in his resignation last week as head girls basketball coach at Glenwood Community High School.

    Portrey, 33-56 in four seasons at the Rams’ helm, will remain as Dean of Students at the high school.

    “I think it was just time to move on,” said Portrey, who previously coached the Glenwood boys team from 1993-1996.

    The Rams were 12-11 last season, the school’s first winning season since 2000 season, with a 53-30 district victory over Creston, the school’s first district win since the 1994-95 season.

  • Rams open season at ISU Indoor

    The Glenwood boys track team opened its season on March 17 at the Iowa State Indoor Meet in Ames.

    The Rams’ Ian Eflin placed 11th in the high jump with a top leap of five feet and also added a 24th place finish in the 60-meter hurdles.

    Glenwood also earned a 15th-place finish from Tyler Fikes in the shot put and a 12th-place finish in the 1,600-meter medley relay. Fikes bested his personal-best throw by more than two feet.

    Glenwood coach Mark Starner called the Rams’ season-opener a “nice start.”

  • Ram girls complete indoor season

    At the Dickinson Relays at the University of Northern Iowa, the Glenwood girls track team showed steady improvement, said coach Brad Rasmussen.

    “Many personal bests were set,” said Rasmussen of the meet, the team’s third indoor meet to open the season. “The girls needs to stay focused on their goals and the goals of the team.”

    Brooke Peckham had the Rams’ top individual finish, placing 37th in the 3000-meter run in 12:09.06.

    The Rams’ 4x800-meter relay team placed 33rd with a time of 2:38.53.

  • Artist sees positives in 1-2 start

    Most coaches would have a hard time finding positives in dropping back-to-back games by a combined score of 7-4.

    The Glenwood boys soccer coach is not one of those coaches, after his team dropped a 5-3 decision to Davenport Assumption and a 2-1 shootout loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier at the Norwalk Invitational on Saturday.
