  • Rams overcome ’junk defense,’ Clarinda for win

    The Glenwood boys basketball team overcame a “junk defense” and a slow start to post a 56-30 victory over Clarinda on Friday.

    The Rams (8-6 overall, 7-5 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) faced a Cardinal 1-3 zone with the fifth defender face-guarding leading-scorer Cole Darrow most of the night. While the Cardinals’ defense held Darrow to just five points, 12 points below his average, the rest of the Rams stepped up on offense.

  • BREAKING NEWS - Glenwood ISL Fails

    For the second straight year, the Glenwood Community School District has failed to pass an Instructional Support Levy.

    On Tuesday, school district voters rejected the levy by a margin of 58 percent to 42 percent - 994 "No" votes to 717 "Yes" votes.

    Voter turnout was nearly twice as large as last year when the special election ended in a 434-434 tie, denying passage by just a single vote.

  • Bringing Hope To 'The Gates of Hell'

    As a surgical tech, Amy Vinton has seen many things in her medical career.

    She’s assisted in open heart surgeries, organ transplants, amputations and about any trauma surgery imaginable.

    But nothing could have prepared Vinton, 26, for the things she saw as part of a medical team from Creighton University Medical Center that traveled to earthquake-ravaged Haiti for 10 days in January.

    “There's nothing that could have prepared any of us for what we saw,” Vinton said. “It was like the gates of hell.”

  • More Arrests In Santa Scheme

    Three more suspects have been arrested in a forgery scheme that bilked more than $11,000 from a Mills County charity that assists families in need during the holidays.

    In addition to Dewey Stuart, 39, of Omaha, who was arrested in December, Mills County Attorney Marci McClellan said Stacey Barrett, 35, of Omaha, Tina Moore, 21, of Omaha, and Stephanie Moore, 25, of Omaha, have all been charged with forgery (a Class D felony) and on-going criminal conduct (a Class B felony). If convicted of both counts, they face up to 30 years in prison.

  • Winter Weather Taking A Toll

    I’m going out on a limb and saying that the Glenwood Community School District’s vote for an instructional support levy next Tuesday won’t end up in a 434-434 tie like it did last year.

     

    Will the levy get the votes needed for passage this year? Your guess is as good as mine.

     

    The way the 2009 election and post-election unfolded is still one of the most unusual stories I’ve ever covered. Pass or fail, I expect things to unfold in a more conventional way this time around.

  • Time For Another Vote

    The last time the Glenwood Community School District attempted to pass an Instructional Support Levy (ISL) the measure failed.

    Public response to the tax that would allow the district to collect more than $800,000 in additional revenue to support their learning needs could not have been more divided in Glenwood. The vote ended in a deadlocked 434-434 tie, a single vote short of the simple majority it needed to pass.

  • Budget Shortfall

    A projected $1 billion “hole” in the state budget for the next year was the major topic of conversation at the first Mills County legislative briefing of the year.

    Western Iowa state representatives Greg Forristall and Richard Anderson joined veteran state senator Hubert Houser in addressing state finances and other legislative issues with approximately 25 people in attendance at the Jan. 16 forum in Glenwood.

  • East Mills crushes Eagles 68-40 for conference crown

    MALVERN - Move over 2009 state football banner, the East Mills High School trophy case is about to get a new addition.

    With a stifling defensive effort and a 14-3 first-quarter run that blew open an 8-6 game, the East Mills boys basketball team cruised to a 68-40 victory over Clarinda Academy on Saturday in the Corner Conference Tournament Championship game.

  • Glenwood leaps over Kuemper

    With his team up 20 points with just over three minutes to go in the third quarter, Glenwood boys basketball coach Curt Schulte didn't look like a coach whose team was up 20.

    Turns out, the coach was right.

    Trailing 39-19 at one time, Kuemper Catholic rallied over the final 11 minutes of the game to cut the Rams' lead to 50-46 before Glenwood rallied -- hitting 17-of-22 free throws in the fourth quarter -- to hold on for a 61-55 victory before a reporter estimated 1,100 in Glenwood Friday.

  • Rams take unbeaten Kuemper down to wire

    Kelsey Eischeid hit 9-of-10 free throws in the final five minutes to help Kuemper Catholic withstand a near Glenwood girls basketball upset bid in a 63-55 Hawkeye 10 Conference victory for the Knights on Friday.

    The way Glenwood started, it didn’t look like Kuemper (12-0) was the undefeated team and the Rams’ the 8-5 upstart. Glenwood opened the game by scoring the first seven points and led 13-4 before Kuemper hit a pair of three pointers to close out the first frame.
