  • One Man's Trash . . .

    When Mills County Sheriff’s Deputy Bob McAleer came across a 1979 Moped motorcycle that had been discarded in a heap of trash, an idea crossed his mind.

    Why not take a look at the little two-wheeler and see if it can be restored and turned into a public relations tool for the sheriff’s office?

    A conversation piece, if you will.

    Well, with about $900 and some mechanical know-how, McAleer was able to put together the newest vehicle in the sheriff’s office fleet.

  • First Taste of Winter

    Officially, winter is still more than two months away.

    It didn’t look that way Saturday morning, however, as snowfall blanketed portions of Nebraska, Iowa and other upper plains states.

    Snowfall totals varied in southwest Iowa from a trace to more than four inches. Some areas of Mills County received up to two inches.

    Some stretches of central and western Nebraska received more than 15 inches of snow, forcing the closure of Interstate 80 and other state and county highways.

  • ANNIVERSARY - Mike and Mary Wasko (50)

    Mike and Mary (Crall) Wasko of Glenwood will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 17.

    The couple was united in marriage on Oct. 17, 1959, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Georgetown.

    Mr. and Mrs. Wasko have four children - Michael of St. Joseph, Mo,; Mary Devereaux and husband Alan of Omaha; Debbie Landon and husband Steve of Missouri Valley; and Diane Whitley and husband Cliff of Glenwood. They have seven grandchildren.

  • Rams dominate Atlantic, move to 4-3 on season

    Nick Uphoff passed for three touchdowns and the Glenwood defense forced five turnovers and allowed just 146 total yards in a 40-7 Class 3A, District 8 victory over Atlantic on Friday.

    For the game, Glenwood gained 317 yards to Trojans’ 146 and ground out 263 rushing.

  • ENGAGEMENT - Krissi Gage/Jordan Hrupek

    Krissi Gage and Jordan Hrupek have announced their engagement and approaching marriage.

    The bride to be is the daughter of Marcey Davis of Houston, Texas. She is a 2001 graduate of Clark High School in San Antonio, Texas, and a 2005 graduate of the US Air Force Academy. Captain Gage is currently serving in the US Air Force piloting the KC135 refueling aircraft and has been frequently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • Rams take title at Southern Cal-Lake City

    Johnny Fuller led four Glenwood runners in the top 10 as the Rams took the team title at the Southern Cal-Lake City Cross Country Invitational last Tuesday.

    The Rams' edged Kuemper Catholic 29 points to 35. Glenwood coach Todd Peverill knew the meet would likely be a dogfight between his team and the Knights.

  • Rams sweep Panthers

    The Glenwood volleybally team earned a 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 sweep victory over Creston in Hawkeye 10 Conference play on Thursday.

    The Rams improved to 9-13 overall and 2-5 in the conference with the win.

    “We played very well tonight,” said Glenwood coach Kara Huisman. “This has been a tough week of practice and I am so proud of the way all of our girls responded. This was a complete team win and the girls deserve it.

    Morgan Lucy led the Rams with 12 kills and five aces.

    Chelsea Konfrst had seven kills and Cassie Stewart had five.

    Her fiance is the son of Doug and Sharon Myers of Glenwood. He’s a supervisor with Thermal Services Heating and Air in Omaha.

    A Sept. 12, 2009, wedding is planned at The Fountains Ballroom.
