The Glenwood girls track team placed second at the Class 3A Regionals at Winterset on Friday with the Rams advancing in nine events to the Iowa State Track Meet this week is Des Moines.

Atlantic ran away with the team title with 173 points to Glenwood's 121.

“This was a very good meed, a lot of fun,” said Glenwood coach Brad Rasmussen. “I think what impressed me most about the meet was the crowd. They really got into cheering us on and I think that really helped. Having that crowd behind you really helps.”

The Glenwood boys tennis team placed fifth at the Class 1A district tennis meet and Grant Nikseresht became the first boys tennis player from Glenwood to qualify for the Iowa Boys State Tennis Meet last Tuesday at Red Oak.

Atlantic was the team champion with 19 points. Clarinda was third with 16 and Red Oak third with 11 team points.

Seeded No. 2 at districts, Nikseresht defeated Red Oak’s Craig White 7-5, 6-3 and Atlantic’s Bryant Johnson 6-0, 6-2 in the opening rounds.

The Glenwood boys track team placed in two events to earn 25th place at the Class 3A portion of the Iowa State Track Meet last week.

Central Clinton-DeWitt was the Class 3A champion, edging runner-up Algona 54-51 in the team points. Sioux City Heelan was third followed by Boone and Atlantic.

Glenwood's 25th place finish was one point behind 24th place Benton-Van Horne.

The Class 3A girls title went to Mount Vernon who easily out distanced Wahlert Dubuque 98.25-78.

A pair of goals by Michaela Moore and Mallory Hoyt in the closing minutes of the first half seized the momentum for Glenwood and two more goals after halftime sealed the win and the Rams' first ever Hawkeye 10 Conference championship in a 4-0 win over Kuemper Catholic last Tuesday.

Glenwood coach Brad Selvey said his team started slowly before coming into their own over the final 50 minutes or so, he said.
