  • FM girls win district, send nine to state

    The Fremont-Mills girls accumulated 118 points to win the Class 1A District title and qualified in nine events for this week’s Iowa State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines.

    The state track and field meet gets underway Thursday in Class 1A and 4A at 9 a.m. The Class 2A and 3A portion begins at 2 p.m.

    The Knight girls edged Bedford 118 to 99 in the team standings for the district title. On the boys side, Council Bluffs St. Albert won nine events to win the district crown. The Fremont-Mills boys were second with 98 points.

  • Rams send 17 to state track meet

    DENISON - The Glenwood boys and girls track teams combined to qualify in 16 events at this week’s Iowa State Track and Field Meet.

    In the state qualifying meet in Denison, Glenwood placed second in the both of the team standings with the boys finishing as the runners up to Sergeant Bluff-Luton (178 to 145) and the girls finishing second to the host Monarchs (176 to 126).

  • ‘A Forgotten Championship’

    There’s no mention of it in the 1967 Glenwood High School yearbook.

    Track and field fans rarely mention it when referring to Glenwood’s historic track and field success, including its 1989, 1990 and 2011 state titles.

    Were it not for the banner, that wasn’t hung in the high school gym until 2011, and a dusty trophy on display behind the more recent outdoor state track championship trophies, Glenwood’s first state championship might be lost to history.

  • Glenwood man dies when glider crashes at Blair Airport

    A 59-year-old Glenwood man died when the glider he was piloting crashed shortly after takeoff at the Blair (Neb.) Airport Saturday afternoon.

    Dr. Michael Boska was pronounced dead at the scene. Boska was alone in the glider as it was being towed in takeoff when according to witnesses, the canopy on the glider unexpectedly opened. As Boska reached for the canopy, he lost control of the plane, resulting in the crash.

  • Glenwood Alumni award winner to address GCHS Class of 2017

    The second recipient of the Glenwood Alumni Association’s Charlene Nelson Nutting and Tom Nutting Alumni Achievement Award will be recognized during Sunday’s commencement ceremony for the Glenwood Community High School Class of 2017.

    Barbara Evans Markuson, a graduate with the Glenwood Class of 1947 who went on to earn international distinction while completing a “trail blazing” career in librarianship, will also give a brief address to this year’s graduating class.

  • Glenwood honors its law enforcement officers

    Around 100 Glenwood-area residents, including many wearing blue clothing, came to the south lawn of the Mills County Courthouse Monday afternoon to show their support for the Mills County law enforcement community.

    The “Paint The Town Blue” display of appreciation for peace officers was held in conjunction with National Police / Law Enforcement Week, which began Sunday and runs through Saturday.

    The 17th Annual Mills County Master Gardener Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 13, from 8:30 – 11 a.m., just in time for Mother's Day.

    For Gina Springhower, the challenges are even greater.

    Confined to a wheel chair with paralysis (the result of an automobile accident more than nine years ago), Gina is tackling and enjoying the most gratifying challenge of her life – motherhood.

    Gina and her husband, John Springhower, are the parents of a happy and energetic 16-month-old son, LaKota, born Dec. 22, 2015, just in time for Christmas.

    Visitors to Glenwood Lake Park will soon have a hard-surface road to drive on thanks to local option sales tax (LOST) dollars from the Mills County Board Supervisors.
