  • Settlement Reached In Cyclists' Deaths

        Terms of a settlement in a combined civil lawsuit have reportedly been reached between Andrew Schlictemeier and the families of four motorcyclists he killed in August 2009 on Interstate 29 near Little Sioux.
        Schlictemeier was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .373 on the evening of Aug. 9, 2009, after he struck and killed four motorcyclists in a I-29 construction zone. Investigators found marijuana and alcohol in Schlictemeier’s vehicle after the collision.

  • Meth Case Sentencing

         A rural Glenwood man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison as one of the ringleaders of a methamphetamine manufacturing operation.
        Andru Alan Fisher, 42, became the sixth person to be sentenced in what was dubbed the “Fisher Farm Case” in Mills County. His sentence was handed down last week in U.S. District Court by Judge Ronald Longstaff. Fisher will be placed on five years of supervised release after his imprisonment and is required to a pay a $100 fine to the state Crime Victim Fund.

  • Icy Road Factor In Fatal Accident

        Randall Jones, 62, of Henderson died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision last Wednesday, Jan. 11, on U.S. Highway 34 in Mills County.
        The accident occurred at 5 p.m. two miles east of Malvern, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol. Jones died at the scene.

  • Bridge Project Moving Forward

    Funds continue to be allocated and work is resuming on the U.S. Highway 34 - Missouri River bridge project in western Iowa.  The bridge will link Mills County with Sarpy County, Neb., south of Offutt Air Force Base.

  • Helping With Animal Control

         Hooves and Paws Rescue has not signed on to serve as Mills County’s animal control agency, but the six-year old, non-profit animal shelter is helping out where it can at the request of area law enforcement.
        “We’re there when they call,” said Genea Stoops, co-founder of Hooves and Paws Rescue. “We assist when they need it but we are not getting paid. We haven’t contracted with anyone.”

  • Medal Of Courage

    Glenwood's Ryan Sell was among four Omaha firefighters recognized last week with a Medal of Courage for their efforts in saving the life of a man trapped in a collapsed trench earlier this fall.

        Sell and fellow members of the Omaha Fire Depart-ment's Special Operations Team rescued 41-year-old Jeff Schnider during a delicate 3 1/2-hour operation on Sept. 16. Schnider, a plumber, was laying pipe in a new subdivision in west Omaha when the trench gave way.

  • Home For The Holidays

    A variety of activities are on tap this weekend for the Glenwood Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Home For The Holidays celebration.

        The festivities begin with a tree-lighting ceremony and holiday sing-along at Glenwood Lake Park Thursday evening and concludes with the Glenwood Ministerial Associa-tion’s “Soup and Song” Sunday evening at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

  • Man's Best Friend

    This Thanksgiving, Paul Brant says he’s thankful to be alive and grateful to his dog, 14-year-old Peaches, a purebred Maltese, for saving his life on Veterans Day.

    Brant suffers from heart disease, diabetes and bladder cancer. On Nov. 11, the 66-year-old Glenwood resident said he was sitting in a chair in his living unit at the Northglen Apartments when he blacked out and fell to the floor. He remembers little about the incident, only that Peaches came to his rescue.

    Happy holidays may not be a phrase that every family understands.  The flood of 2011 has left people out of their homes, out of jobs.  The economy continues to be down, and for many people, it is a struggle to obtain food, clothing and personal supplies.

         There is a place in Glenwood that can make many people’s lives a bit easier and their holidays a bit brighter.
