  • Lost In Transition

    The Glenwood Community School District opened its new high school on Aug. 27. Lost in the glare of the spotlight on the $22 million, state-of-the art building is Glenwood’s other new school.

    Classes began Aug. 26 at the new Glenwood Middle School, formerly Glenwood’s high school, just across the Keg Creek. The new middle school is a “big improvement” over the middle school’s former home in the Meyer Building on the Glenwood Resource Center campus, said first-year GMS Principal Heidi Stanley.

  • School Board Vote Is In

    Incumbent Dave Warren and newcomers Henry Clark and Dave Blum have been elected to seats on the Glenwood Board of Education.

    Warren, Clark and Blum were the top three vote-getters in Tuesday’s school board election, garnering 809, 697 and 526 votes respectively. Write-in candidate Cheryll Ross finished in fourth place, presumably receiving nearly all of the 382 write-in votes that were cast. Tim Harms received 313 votes, followed by Rex A. Ruth with 302, incumbent Bill Agan with 252 and Edward Lund with 212.

    Brick streets have resurfaced as an issue of discussion and debate for the Glenwood City Council.

    Two Glenwood citizens – Jean Jaskierny and Linda Forman – attended council meetings in August to voice their displeasure with the city’s public works department for using concrete to repair a brick intersection at Coolidge and Hazel Street earlier this summer.

    It isn’t taking long for Glenwood Community High School students and staff to warm up to their new school.

    Doors to the $21.5 million facility were formally opened Thursday morning as freshmen and sophomores reported for orientation and an abbreviated schedule of classes. Students were visibly excited about stepping into their new school for the first time.

    "It’s just really big. It’s probably the nicest school I’ve ever been in," said sophomore Ben Umberger.

    Morgan Lucy said she was in awe over the size of the gymnasium.

    GCHS Principal Kerry Newman confirmed Wednesday that a follow-up inspection from the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office has taken place and the district has been given the green light to occupy the school on Thursday.
