  • High School Creating Buzz

    It isn’t taking long for Glenwood Community High School students and staff to warm up to their new school.

    Doors to the $21.5 million facility were formally opened Thursday morning as freshmen and sophomores reported for orientation and an abbreviated schedule of classes. Students were visibly excited about stepping into their new school for the first time.

    "It’s just really big. It’s probably the nicest school I’ve ever been in," said sophomore Ben Umberger.

    Morgan Lucy said she was in awe over the size of the gymnasium.

    GCHS Principal Kerry Newman confirmed Wednesday that a follow-up inspection from the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office has taken place and the district has been given the green light to occupy the school on Thursday.

    The annual Keg Creek Days celebration takes place this weekend at Glenwood Lake Park.

    A variety of activities are planned beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. on Sunday.

    Saturday’s activities include children’s games and activities, a lawn mower poker run and a benefit concert for the Davies Amphitheater roof repair project. Sunday’s highlights are an antique machinery show and shine, heritage demonstrations and entertainment.

    MALVERN –Extension Director Sherry Ford is losing her job at the end of the month, which means the citizens of Mills County are losing a valuable community resource.

    Thanks to a cost-cutting restructuring plan announced earlier this summer by Iowa State University, Ford and her fellow county extension directors from across the state are having their positions eliminated and replaced by regional directors who will serve multiple counties at one time. The impact will be felt across the state.

  • Start Date Remains Aug. 26

    Pending final approval of the state fire marshal, the new Glenwood Community High School will welcome students on the first day of school with the rest of the Glenwood School District.

    School begins in the district Aug. 26. High school juniors and seniors will report that same day at the high school. Freshmen and sophomores will start the following day. Classes begin at 8:05 a.m.
