The Glenwood Board of Education voted to increase the cost of school lunches and preschool tuition but declined to increase student text book fees for the 2009-2010 school year at its monthly meeting last Monday, June 8.

The board voted unanimously for a five-cent increase for student lunches to $2 per meal and a 30-cent increase for teacher and adult lunches to $2.80. Breakfast costs will remain the same.

A southwest Iowa man has been sentenced to serve 20 years in prison for conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine in Mills County and other areas of southwest Iowa.

In addition to the 20-year prison sentence, William Lonnie Hanshaw, 52, of Red Oak was also sentenced in U.S. District Court to 10 years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the state Crime Victim Fund.

Hanshaw’s sentence was announced last week in a news release from the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa.

The Fountains Ballroom hosted a coffee Thursday for members of the Glenwood Area Chamber of Commerce.

Just 168 days ago, the Fountains Ballroom was hosting fire departments from Glenwood, Oak Township, Pacific Junction and Silver City.

A fire raged through the popular wedding facility northwest of Mineola on Dec. 17, destroying the building and threatening the more than 80 weddings already scheduled at the facility and the family-run business owned by Erin and Marty Williams.

A former City Hall employee has been appointed to fill a position on the Glenwood City Council.

Susan Hirschman was appointed to the position Tuesday, May 26, during the city council’s regular meeting. She was one of three citizens considered for the Ward III seat that became vacant when Kim Clark resigned from the council in April.

In a verbal poll of council members, Hirschman received the recommendation of Allan Christiansen and Clare Bangs. Craig Florian voiced his support for Jeremy Rodman, while Kay LeFever recommended Lyn Mintle.
