The ambassadors for the 2009 Mills County Relay For Life share a common bond.

Vicki Bird, Marcia Keith and Sid Williams have found out first-hand how formidable of a foe cancer can be. They are all at different stages of overcoming a disease that claims over 500,000 lives every year. Latest statistics show that one out of every four Americans will be diagnosed with cancer sometime during their lifetime.

“When you see the survivors at the Relay For Life, it reminds you of how many people have been affected,” Bird said.

The Mills County Relay for Life Entertainment and Activities Schedule for June 13 -14 is as follows:

Saturday, June 13

4 p.m. - Event Kick-off and Team Lap (line-up begins at 3:45). Prayer by Pastor Mike Stevens (United Methodist Minister for Hillsdale, Pacific Junction and Silver City); Flag Ceremony - presentation by Cub Scouts Troop 432 and Boy Scouts Troop 243; Star Spangled Banner - Lake Park Quartet.

4:30 p.m. Sheltered Reality.

The Melody Wranglers kick it up with old style country, western swing and honky-tonk music. They tip their hats to such country music greats as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Bob Wills, Buck Owens, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard. Each of the Wranglers has over 30 years of professional music experience and all are former members of the legendary Nebraska country-swing band, Sour Mash. Wrangler members have recorded on numerous albums and CDs, performed on radio and TV and have won awards at music festivals across the country.

SILVER CITY - The writing has been on the wall for several months, but that doesn’t make a pending bank closing any easier to swallow for the Mills County community of Silver City.

On Friday, Omaha-based First National Bank will close what’s believed to be its smallest branch location - in Silver City.

“It’s kind of like losing a limb,” Silver City City Clerk Cheryl Evans said Monday. “Everybody hates to see it happen. It is a sign of a city dying when you lose a business like this.”
