Music students might have to conduct rehearsals in the wrestling room for a few weeks and lunches might have to be catered in from an off-site cafeteria, but the Glenwood Community School District is set on opening its new high school on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

That’s the plan - at least for now.

Three communities in Mills County are making their final preparations for RAGBRAI.

The Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa will pass through the county Sunday, the first day of the ride, as bicyclists make their way from Council Bluffs to Red Oak for their first overnight stop.

SILVER CITY - It wasn’t your typical summer vacation experience.

More than 100 youngsters from western Iowa and eastern Nebraska converged on Mills County last week to experience first-hand what it was like to be a pioneer on the Mormon Pioneer Trail in the mid 1800s. The walkers are all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A changing of the guard is about to take place at the First National Bank branch office in Glenwood.

On Friday, Patrick Ross will retire as president / branch manager, putting a formal end to a financial career that began 40 years ago. Taking over for Ross will be Doug Meggison, a lending officer and vice president at the bank for nearly 21 years.

“I’m of age (65) to retire,” Ross said during a recent interview. “Cheryll, my wife, is retired and we’re wanting to do some traveling, so I just felt now is the time.”
