  • Trailer theft suspect in Montgomery County Jail

        The Mills County Attorney’s Office has issued an arrest warrant for Miles Ryan Pein in the theft and arson of a trailer stolen from Glenwood Community Church.
        Mills County Sheriff’s Deputy Bruce Paulsen said Pein, 25, is in custody in Montgomery County on unrelated charges.

        Brent Yezek adores his grandfather.
        Separated by 800 miles, Yezek, who lives in Austin, Texas, cherished the spare moments he got with the 90-year-old who lives in an assisted living facility in Manly, Iowa. So when Brent went to visit the man they call Buster a few years ago, he was saddened to see his grandfather suffering the affects of Alzheimer’s Disease.

  • GCSD planning renovations at Northeast Elementary

        The Glenwood Community School district is planning renovations to Northeast Elementary School.
        The district opened bid letting earlier this month to make changes required by state fire officials in the school’s “open pod” areas between classrooms. The renovation will involve building partitions in these areas leading into classrooms so they may still be utilized by teachers and students and conform with state fire codes.

  • County to change land use regulations

        The Mills County Board of Supervisors is proposing a change to its zoning ordinance that would open up more of the county to what it calls “resource extraction” in the county’s unincorporated areas.

  • Motorplex racing back after flood-shortened 2011 season

        PACIFIC JUNCTION - Jim “Roadkill” Howe doesn’t stop moving.  It’s 5:30 p.m. Friday, and Howe, operations manager of Mid-America Motorplex (MAM), is holding a quick staff meeting inside the office before the weekend begins. He simultaneously texts an insurance agent about a wreck as he updates the MAM website and Facebook page.
        On the road course, cars zoom by at 120 mph. Outside the drag strip, cars line up and wait patiently for the gate to open.

  • A Father's Day Tradition

    The aroma of grilled burgers, brats and hot dogs hovered over the patio outside the Glen Haven nursing home Monday evening as residents, families and staff enjoyed the annual Father’s Day barbecue.

        Just as they have since the event was conceived nearly 40 years ago, members of the Glenwood Optimist Club were manning the grills. Ed Thompson and Bob Blasi, long-standing members of the club, helped at the first Father’s Day barbecue in the mid 1970s and were doing their part again Monday.

  • Father, Son Injured In Crash

        Two Mills County men were injured in a fatal crash Sunday morning on Interstate 29 near Crescent.
        Richard Miller, 49, of Pacific Junction was driving a 2001 Volkswagon Passat in the right lane of northbound I-29 around 9 a.m. when his vehicle was struck by another northbound vehicle, a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Joel Garcia-Lucero (age unknown) of Omaha. Garcia-Lucero was attempting to pass Miller when he lost control and crossed into the right lane, striking the Passat, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol.

  • Relay For Life Ambassadors

    The 2012 Mills County Relay for Life is set for June 2-3 from 4 p.m. - 8 a.m. at Ram Memorial Field in Glenwood.

        More than 1,000 walkers are expected to participate in the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
        The Relay for Life committee has selected four ambassadors for this year’s event.
