  • Levee Watch

    Their mission is to identify potential problems and trouble spots that could compromise the structural integrity of the Missouri River levee system in western Mills County.

        Working in teams of two, soldiers from the Iowa Army National Guard have been patrolling Mills County’s 26 miles of levee since mid-June. Most of the soldiers assigned to Mills County are members of the 1168th Transportation Co., based out of Audubon, Perry and Marshalltown.

  • Governor Gets 'First-hand Look' At Flood-fighting Efforts

  • Steps Taken To Protect Water Plant

    The Glenwood Municipal Utilities Board believes it’s done everything in its power to protect the Glenwood Water Treatment plant from potential Missouri River floodwater.

        “I think we’ve done everything that was humanly possible to protect that plant,” John Dean, chairman of the GMU board of directors said last week. “We did the best thing we could possibly do. Are we still going to lose it? I don’t know. That water could get 8 feet there, but in my lifetime it never has.”

  • Mandatory Evacuation West Of I-29

    A mandatory evacuation order was issued today by the Mills County Board of Supervisors and Mills County Emergency Management.  The evacuation area includes the following: west of Interstate 29 (I-29) and South of Gaston Avenue to the Fremont County Line.  Due to the rise of interior ground water east of the Mills County Levee system, various roads in this area are becoming impassable.

  • Secretary Of Agriculture In Glenwood

    U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack spent nearly three hours at Glenwood Community High School Thursday afternoon discussing flooding along the Missouri River and its impact on agriculture.

    Vilsack shared information with an audience of approximately 100 Iowa and Nebraska farmers, elected officials and representatives from various governmental agencies.

  • Presidential Candidate Wants To 'Fix America'

    Carrying a symbolic red, white and blue wrench, Republican presidential candidate John Davis made a brief appearance in Glenwood last Wednesday, vowing to “fix America.”

    The Grand Junction, Colo., home builder made a 15-minute stop on Town Square during his on-going effort to visit every county in the United States. Davis and his family are traveling the country in a custom-painted, 43-foot motor home.

    “I know a lot of the candidates just focus on Iowa,” Davis said. “I’m traveling to all the states because I’m committed to the entire country.”

  • Treasurer's Office Employee Dismissed

        Auto department deputy Tammy Gammon has been terminated as an employee at the Mills County Treasurer’s Office, Mills County Attorney Eric Hansen confirmed Friday.
        Hansen said Gammon was notified in writing of her dismissal.
        Until last week, Gammon had been on paid administrative leave as the focus of an  investigation of “discrepancies” uncovered at the treasurer’s office.

  • Dirt Moving For Highway 34 Project

    The Iowa Department of Transportation has released an updated timeline for the U.S. Highway 34 – Missouri River Bridge project that will link western Mills County with Sarpy County in eastern Nebraska.

        The timeline calls for the $138 million project to be completed as early as the fall of 2013.

  • Recorder Getting Out Of Passport Business

        The Mills County Recorder’s Office is getting out of the passport business.
        Effective May 1, a change in requirements for offices accepting passport applications will force several recorders’ offices across Iowa to stop offering the passport service, Mills County Recorder Vicki McClintic announced earlier this month.
