  • Supervisors Focus Of Forum

        Candidates for the three Mills County Courthouse positions up for election this year took part in a public forum Thursday night at the Glenwood American Legion.
        The majority of the written questions from audience members were directed at supervisor candidates Richard Crouch (incumbent Republican) and Jack May (candidate by petition). Several questions were also asked of county treasurer candidate Craig Florian (candidate by petition).

  • Pool Proposal

        An outdoor swimming pool being proposed for the city of Glenwood will be the focus of discussion at a public forum Monday night, Oct. 18, at the Mills County YMCA community room. The forum begins at 7 p.m.

  • Plea Bargain Reached In Pit Bull Case

    An Omaha man arrested last spring for the abuse and neglect of more than 20 pit bulls on a property near Pacific Junction has agreed to a plea bargain with the Mills County Attorney’s Office.

    Michael J. Simet, 56, pleaded guilty on Sept. 21 to animal torture and animal neglect, both aggravated misdemeanors.

    If the sentencing judge agrees to the deal, Simet will receive a suspended jail sentence of four years, placed on supervised probation for a year and serve a week in the Mills County Jail. Simet will also not be allowed to own any animals during his supervised probation.

  • More Heated Words In P.J.

    PACIFIC JUNCTION - By a slim 3-2 margin, the Pacific Junction City Council passed a controversial resolution at last Monday’s regular meeting aimed at condemning derogatory remarks by elected city officials.

    Resolution 2010-17, dubbed “Resolution on Equality and Conduct,” was drafted following comments made by council member Rodney Bents at an Aug. 16 meeting that Mayor Jim Lovely and city attorney T.J. Patterman felt disparaged Mexicans.

    In a tape recorded discussion at the Aug. 16 meeting, Bents can be heard saying, “Well, then don’t be getting hit by a Mexican up in Omaha.”

    The driver involved in an August crash on Interstate 29 that killed four motorcyclists returning from a rally in Sturgis, S.D., had a blood-alcohol level of 0.373, more than four times the legal limit in the state of Iowa.

        The Mills County Assessor's Office is currently in the process of a county-wide reappraisal.
        When all is said and done, the assessor’s office, with the assistance of an outside contractor, will have reappraised more than 17,000 parcels in the county sometime next year.
