  • Mills County residents looking for good entertainment don’t need to look far from home. The Mills Masquers community theater group has entertained southwest Iowa residents for 35 years.

      The theater troupe began in 1977, when resident Marge Smith wanted to put on a play for Mills County residents. That play, a melodrama, was called No Opry at the Opera House Tonight.

  •     Glenwood tween Madison Morris, like many 12-year-olds, keeps very busy. She is a nearly straight-A student, plays clarinet in the Glenwood Middle School band, and plays volleyball and basketball for the school.  Morris, however, has one special activity that many of her fellow seventh-grade classmates do not. She has become the Iowa triple-crown champion in ATA Tae kwon do for the second year in a row.

  • Five antique tractors from Mills County have begun a month-long journey to their new home in western Europe.

        The tractors were among 25 sold during an auction last month at the Robert Leick property north of Glenwood. Four of the tractors sold to online bidder Marc Geerkens of Belgium belonged to Leick. The fifth was owned by Elmer Niemoller of Mineola.

  • Glenwood resident Bob Fisher started a holiday hobby that has lasted for 10 years -because of his son’s wedding.

        Fisher’s son, Christian, asked all the men in his wedding party to grow beards for the big day. Bob had never grown a beard , but eventually agreed.
        Bob’s wife, Jan, liked the sight of him with a beard and encouraged him to keep it after the wedding. At that point, she got an idea.

  •     Lisa Lothrop and Matthew Stewart have announced their engagement. Ms. Lothrop and her fiance are planning a June 17, 2011, wedding at Havelock United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Neb.

        The bride-to-be is the daughter of Dr. Robert and Rhonda Lothrop of Glenwood. Her fiance’s parents are David and Brenda Stewart of Murdock, Neb.

  •     Ashlee Ranee Aldana and Jason Austin Miller, both of Nebraska City, Neb., have announced their engagement and approaching marriage.


        The bride-elect is the daughter of Jose and Paula Aldana of Nebraska City.
        Her fiance is the son of Christina Androy and the late Gilbert Androy of Malvern, and Jeffery and Shirley Miller of Hastings.
        An Oct. 16, 2010, wedding is planned at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City.

  • Don and Vicki Boehmer of St. Charles, Mo., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Abby, to Aaron Eich, son of Bill and Kay Eich of Glenwood.

    The bride-to-be is a graduate of Central Missouri State University and is employed by KDR Designer Showroom in Kansas City as a sales associate. Her fiance is also a graduate of Central Missouri State University and is employed by Great Lakes Airline as a pilot.
    An Oct. 23, 2010, wedding is planned at St. Joachim and Ann Catholic Church in St. Charles.

  • Amanda Mulholland and Andrew DeGroote were united in marriage on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Norwalk United Methodist Church in Norwalk.
    The nuptials were officiated by the Rev. Kiboko Kiboko. A reception followed at the Blank Golf Course in Des Moines.

    The bride is the daughter of Tom and Deanne Mulholland of Malvern and granddaughter of Don and Suzanne Simmons of Thurman, and Nancy Mulholland of Glenwood.
    The groom is the son of Don and Val DeGroote of New Hartford and the grandson of Clara DeGroote of Parkersburg and Marian Bundy of Cedar Falls.

  •     Lorilee Fleming  of Glenwood and Tyson Conn of Sioux Falls, S.D., have announced their engagement and approaching wedding.


        The bride-to-be is the daughter of Eileen Fleming and the late Bill Fleming. Her fiance is the son of Dan and Pam Conn of Sioux Falls.
        The couple met at and graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls.
        An Oct. 23, 2010, wedding is planned at Heartland Community Church in Sioux Falls.

  •     Dale and Gayle Spetman are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary with a dinner and dance on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Mineola Community Center.


        The dinner begins at 6 p.m. with the dance to follow from 8 p.m. to midnight.
        The Spetmans were married on Sept. 7, 1985, in the park gazebo on
    Main Street in Silver City.
