  • As far as Renee Coffey is concerned, she will always have eight children.

    Renee and husband Charles lost their daughter Amanda Grace a little over six year ago to complications from anencephaly, a neural tube defect that prevented their daughter’s skull and brain from developing properly.

    Amanda Grace Coffey was delivered by cesarean at Creighton University Medical Center on April 23, 2004. She lived just over 27 hours and died surrounded by her mother, father and seven brothers and sisters.

  • Anencephaly occurs in just three of every 10,000 live births in the United States.

    There is no cure nor medical intervention for the neural tube birth defect.

    Treatment for babies born with the fatal disorder is supportive; parents are instructed to keep the baby warm and protect the baby’s exposed tissue.

    Half of babies born with anencephaly die within 10 days of birth. In very rare cases anencephalic babies live more than a month.

  • Patrick and Susan Collins of Glenwood have announced the engagement of their daughter, Lucy Collins, to Nathan Hansen, son of Walter and Rita Hansen of Valley Center, Kan.

    Ms. Collins is a graduate of Glenwood Community High School, Class of 2001 and the University of Iowa, Class of 2006. She is presently employed as a graphic designer at Atlas Advertising in Denver, Colo.

    Hansen is a graduate of Valley Center High School, class of 1999; and IECA; class of 2009. He is presently employed as an electrical service technician in Denver.

  • Mike and Mary (Crall) Wasko of Glenwood will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 17.

    The couple was united in marriage on Oct. 17, 1959, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Georgetown.

    Mr. and Mrs. Wasko have four children - Michael of St. Joseph, Mo,; Mary Devereaux and husband Alan of Omaha; Debbie Landon and husband Steve of Missouri Valley; and Diane Whitley and husband Cliff of Glenwood. They have seven grandchildren.

  • Krissi Gage and Jordan Hrupek have announced their engagement and approaching marriage.

    The bride to be is the daughter of Marcey Davis of Houston, Texas. She is a 2001 graduate of Clark High School in San Antonio, Texas, and a 2005 graduate of the US Air Force Academy. Captain Gage is currently serving in the US Air Force piloting the KC135 refueling aircraft and has been frequently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

    The bride-elect is the daughter of Michael and Darcy Yocum of Glenwood and Brian Hansen of Running Springs, Calif. She’s employed at Greco Insurance in Papillion, Neb., as an independent agent.

    Her fiance is the son of Doug and Sharon Myers of Glenwood. He’s a supervisor with Thermal Services Heating and Air in Omaha.

    A Sept. 12, 2009, wedding is planned at The Fountains Ballroom.

    The bride-elect is the daughter of James Baker of Papillion, Neb., and Deanne Wallfred of Yuba City, Calif. She’s a 2002 graduate of Bellevue East High School and a 2006 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a B.S. in elementary education. She’s a teacher at Highland Elementary School in Omaha.

  • Roger Young and Linda Young of Glenwood have announced the engagement of their son, Brian Matthew Young of Omaha, to Jennifer Lee Tjeerdsma of Mesa, Ariz., daughter of Keith of Jill Tjeerdsma of Sergeant Bluff.

    The future groom is a graduate of Glenwood Community High School and Northwestern College in Orange City. He serves as an associate at Living Hope Community Church in Council Bluffs.
