MALVERN – East Mills scored early and often Friday night as the Wolverines overwhelmed visiting Clarinda Academy, 61-0.
The win improved East Mills’ record to 2-0 on the young season and served as a final tune-up for the Wolverines before opening district play this week at (Oakland) Riverside.
“We knew they were going to be very physical, but we also knew if we executed and did our plays correctly, things would work out well for us,” East Mills head coach Andy Irwin said. “We mixed up the pass and run a lot better than we did in the first game.”
The Wolverines, who raced to a 47-0 halftime lead, finished the night with 232 yards rushing and 129 yards passing. The clock ran continuously in the second half because of the 35-point “mercy” rule.
Senior running back Colby Jennings was the offensive workhorse for East Mills, scoring first-half touchdowns on runs of 28 and 34 yards. He finished the night as the game’s leading rusher with 159 yards.
Wolverine quarterback Login Currin did some first-half damage on the ground and in the air, scoring a pair of touchdowns on 1-yard plunges and teaming up with Michael Story on a 40-yard scoring toss. Lane Stortenbecker, Matt Walliser and Travis Tupper also scored touchdowns for the Wolverines.
In addition to his touchdown, Tupper put on an impressive display of place kicking, drilling field goals of 44 and 50 yards and converting 7-of-8 extra point attempts.
Defensively, Story recorded a team-high nine tackles.
“We did a good job with our reads on defense,” Irvin said. “And we did a good job applying pressure.”
