A smothering Harlan defense effort held Glenwood to 47 total yards and four first downs in the Class 3A, District 1 opener for both teams on Friday.
“They scored 21 points in the first 12 minutes and 30 seconds. After that, we didn't do too bad defensively,” said Glenwood coach Brian Albert. “We just didn't have an answer for them.”
The Cyclones (2-1, 1-0 in the district) scored on their first three possession while holding Glenwood to negative net yards in the first half.
“Offensively we did not move the ball and we did not execute well,” said Albert. “It was very frustrating. We’re not an explosive offense and we have a tough time scoring points.”
Albert said the “wow” factor of being a young, inexperienced team on the road at the top ranked team in Class 3A weighed on his team.
“They (the team) would probably say no but I would say it did,” said Albert. “They are a very, very good and experienced team. They're just coming off a loss so they came right at us on that first drive and had a first down on about every play.”
The Cyclones finished with 391 total yards, 161 of it coming on 21 carries by all-state running back Dylan Barrett. Barrett also added two touchdowns. Quarterback Zach Osborn added 189 through the air on 20-of-30 passing.
The Rams finished with 25 net rushing yards and 22 passing. Quarterback Jon Williams was 5-of-17 passing with an interception.
Cole Darrow led the defense with 10 tackles, including seven solos, and a fumble recovery. Ian Eflin added eight tackles.
