The Glenwood Board of Education voted unanimously late Tuesday afternoon to terminate the contract of Glenwood Community High School principal Kerry Newman.
According to wording of a motion passed at a special meeting of the board, Newman will have five days to contest the termination. She has been on paid leave since Jan. 18.
Reasons given for the termination include, "inappropriate relationship with a district employee, unprofessional conduct, poor judgment, inappropriate use / misuse of district resources and (being a) poor and ineffective role model."
All questions seeking comment after the meeting were directed to board president Theresa Romens.
Romens said the motion “speaks for itself” but declined to comment on the specifics of the investigation or the evidence the board looked at in making their decision during the nearly two hour meeting.
“We’re moving forward. Now it’s all in Mrs. Newman’s hands,” Romens added.
If Newman chooses to contest her termination she must file a written request with the Glenwood School Board Secretary requesting a hearing. That notification would then be forwarded to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners along with a request that the board submit a list of five possible qualified administrative law judges, one of which would preside over the hearing.
Newman was not available for comment after the meeting.
