Kate Walker’s three-pointer with just over three minutes in the game lifted Red Oak to a 49-45 victory over Glenwood in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball Friday.

With 3:08 left in the game and the Rams (5-3 overall, 4-1 in the conference) up 43-41, Walker sank a go-ahead three-pointer to give Red Oak (7-2 overall, 6-0 in the conference) a 44-43 lead, which they would not relinquish.

“It put the pressure on them to answer,” Red Oak girls basketball coach Dan Martinez said after the game.

Walker followed up less than 30 seconds later with a dish down in the post to Sabrina Guerra, who sank a lay up and put the Tigers ahead 46-43 with 2:46 remaining.

Red Oak forward Grace Blomstedt scored the final three points for the Tigers, courtesy of clutch free throws.

Blomstedt’s clinching free throws came with 21 seconds left in the game as Glenwood was forced to foul to extend the game.

“It was a battle,” said Glenwood coach Barry Loeffelbein after the game. “They’re a good team and have some good players. Went down to the end and they just had the upper hand the last couple of minutes.”

The Tigers entered the final quarter with a 36-34 lead. Glenwood took the lead back for a few seconds though, thanks to a Jana King three-pointer. Walker got the lead back on a two-pointer less than 10 seconds later.

Halie Darrow put Glenwood ahead 43-39 in the final frame, thanks to a foul and made a free throw with 6:08 left. Darrow followed up by making the front end of a one-and-one with 3:55 left.

“I thought we had some good shots, we just didn’t knock them down,” Loeffelbein said. “They got a lot of rebounds in big spots and that kind of hurt us.”
Walker hit a pair of free throws a possession later to cut the lead in half before her go-ahead three.

Red Oak and Glenwood went back and forth over the first three quarters. The Rams jumped out to an 8-4 lead halfway through the first quarter. However, the Tigers scored six of the next eight points to end the quarter with a 10-10 tie.

In the second quarter, Glenwood jumped ahead 18-12 with 5:39 remaining in the half only to watch as the Tigers’ Walker and Blomstedt erased the deficit and tied the game 18-18 with more than four minutes until halftime.

Walker led the way for Red Oak with 24 points and had six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Blomstedt finished the game with 11 points, including 7-of-10 from the free throw line with seven rebounds. Maranda Gowdy scored six points, while Guerra and Angela Mahoney each scored four. Mahoney also led the team in rebounding with eight boards.
