The Glenwood boys wrestling team had two first place trophy winners and six more wrestlers place in the top three in their weight classes to take home the team title at the Dan Hill Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday in Harlan.
The Rams’ edged second place Gretna, Neb. 187.5 to 152.5 in the team scores.
“We wrestled really well as a team,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “Could have been better. We’re always looking to improve.”
Cole Peckham (113 pounds), Sam Jameson (126), Josh Clark (152) and Alex Killpack (285) all reached finals for the Rams.
Peckham scored a 10-5 decision over the host Cyclones’ Chris Hopkins for his title, while Clark won a 16-2 major decision over Nate Luna of Des Moines Lincoln to win his class. Jameson lost by pin to Underwood’s Andrew Foutch in his final, while Killpack dropped a 3-0 decision to Andrew Bywater.
Those four, Asche said, had strong days in their respective weight classes but it was the depth of his team that was the difference.
“Cole, Sam, Josh Clark and Killpack all wrestled well,” Asche said. “The biggest surprise was all the pins we had. Those bonus points, which everybody helped us out in, was really the difference for us.”
After Thursday’s dual sweeps of Kuemper Catholic and OA-BCIG and Saturday’s team title in Harlan, Asche’s team is off to a fast start. The coach isn’t surprised.
“I think the kids are buying into the program and what we’re trying to instill in them. They understand they’re a special group of boys and we can’t have any let downs this year,” he said. “Last year at the Harlan tournament, we didn’t show real well and I left scratching my head. This year, there are areas where we need to improve, but I’m not scratching my head too much.”
