The Glenwood girls basketball team avenged a seven-point loss in last year’s season opener with a 69-42 victory over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson last Tuesday. The Rams (1-0) dominated from the opening tip, not allowing a Yellowjacket field goal until just 1:31 remained in the opening quarter. “I really think we did a lot of good things for a first game,” said Glenwood coach Leon Portrey. “They (Thomas Jefferson) weren’t a real strong team but they had quickness on the perimeter I thought would give us trouble, but we did enough good things to pull away. I was surprised by how easily we put them away.” Glenwood’s post-tandem of Chelsea Konfrst and Morgan Lucy gave the smaller Yellowjackets fits inside. Konfrst, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, had a career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds and Lucy, a 6-foot-2 freshman, had eight points and 14 rebounds. “They both did a real good job inside controlling the boards and scoring,” said Portrey. With Konfrst and Lucy patrolling inside, point guard Tabi Evans found her stroke early and often in the first half. The senior connected on 5-of-6 first half three’s and finished with 15 points on the night. “I think she was the real difference,” Portrey said of Evans. “Not just her shooting but how she controlled the ball. She did a good job of getting the ball inside for good shots.”
