The Glenwood wrestling team split a double-dual last Tuesday in Atlantic.

The Rams dominated Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson 68-6 in a non-conference dual before being edged by the home Trojans 36-22 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference capper for both teams.

With the Glenwood victory the Trojans sealed up the conference crown with a perfect dual record of 18-0 overall and 9-0 in the conference. Glenwood finishes fourth with a conference record of 6-2 and an overall dual record of 9-6.

Against the Yellowjackets, Glenwood won every match it had a wrestler competing in. The lone loss was at 215pounds where the Rams were open.

Sam Jameson (103 pounds), Jesse Bendt (112), Nate Harms (125), Tyler Maxwell (145), Alex Reinert (160), Drew Howell (171) and Hunter Hoffman (189) all recorded falls while Beau Johnson (130) and Walker Langel (140) both won by technical fall.

In their 135-pound bout, the Rams’ Steve Gutschenritter won a tough 5-3 decision over the Yellowjacket’s top wrestler, Duane Richardson.

“Against T.J. I thought we looked pretty good,“ said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “Gutschenritter had a big match and knocked off one of their best kids. Richardson was a returning place winner and has been ranked really high at 130 pounds all year. That was a big win for Steve. That builds confidence going into districts.“

Against Atlantic, Glenwood was without 160-pounder Jon Williams who had to miss the final dual with a skin infection. Without Williams, who is 25-15 on the season and was a finalist at the Hawkeye 10 Tournament last weekend, the Rams lost crucial points Dyer thinks could have really helped his team.

“That kind of messed some things up,“ Dyer said. “We could have adjusted our line-up a little more to make the dual close. The bottom line is that we got beat by a very solid team. They (Atlantic) have great team balance and a lot of depth. Most of their J.V. kids would be varsity somewhere.“

As it was, Glenwood won seven matches, but just one by fall compared to the Trojans’ three pins and one win by forfeit.

The Rams 9-6 dual record isn’t where Dyer hoped his team would be to close out the regular season but he’s looking forward to the post season.

“It’s not where I wanted to be, but we still finished in the top four in the conference in duals. We now focus on districts and state and make a big run for the finish of the year,“ said Dyer.

The Rams are next in action on Saturday at Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson for Class 2A Districts.
