C.B. Abraham Lincoln 58,
Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln used a swarming defense to force 21 turnovers in a 58-51 non-conference victory over the Glenwood girls basketball team last Tuesday.
“We wasted a lot of trips down the floor – unforced turnovers, dribbled it off people’s feet, threw it away. We just didn’t take care of the ball,” said Glenwood coach Barry Loeffelbein. “They were a much tougher defensive team than we faced earlier. They were just in our face a lot, they were quicker and more athletic and we weren’t ready to handle it.”
The Rams, who drop to 1-1, opened the season with a 66-22 rout of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson on Nov. 23.
In Tuesday’s game, the Yellowjackets led by as many as 10 in the first half and took a 27-21 lead into intermission. In the third quarter, Abraham Lincoln opened the half on a 6-1 run to swell their lead to 47-35 to end the quarter.
In the fourth, Glenwood rallied to trim the lead to 55-49 on Grace Newman’s three-pointer with just under a minute to go, but that was as close as the Rams’ would get.
“We hustled hard and battled,” said Loeffelbein. “We didn’t let it get away. We could have folded when they got up 12 and made it ugly, but we’d cut it to seven or eight but we couldn’t get over the hump. We battled hard, we just have to execute better.”
Morgan Lucy led Glenwood with 22 points. Lexi Fisher added eight and Newman six.
