Nate Harms and Colin White won individual titles and Glenwood placed fourth as a team at the Dan Hill Invitational Wrestling Meet in Harlan on Saturday.

Harms at 125 pounds and White, a heavyweight, both won all three of their matches in the tournament.

Ram 119-pounder Sam Jameson earned Glenwood’s lone second place medal. Steve Gutschenritter (135 pounds) and Jon Williams (160) both earned third-place finishes.

“Overall I thought we did some good things today, but we also have some things we really need to work on,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer.

Ram 145-pounder Tyler Maxwell failed to meet weight leaving that weight empty for Glenwood.

“If he wrestles today we are probably a top two team,” said Dyer of Maxwell. “This is one of the first times that we placed everyone that wrestled so that is a good thing.”

Rams split season opener

The Glenwood wrestling team opened its season by splitting a pair of duals in its new gymnasium last Tuesday.

Catholic and a tight 38-29 loss to Battle Creek-Ida Grove/Odebolt-Arthur in the capper.

“I thought we came out very strong against Kuemper,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “Kuemper is rebuilding and I thought we came out and wrestled well for the first dual of the year.”

Against BCIGOA, a 2A State Dual Team Qualifier last year, Dyer thought his team was close on several matches but couldn’t quite get it done.

“We didn’t have a couple of matches go our way and it cost us,” he said. “We win some of those close matches we win this dual. (Nate) Harms and (Beau) Johnson lost close matches to ranked opponents and if we get on our offense we win those matches. Sam Jameson and Billy Lucy did a great job getting pins at 103 and 112. Steve (Gutschenritter) and Tyler (Maxwell) also did a great job getting us some bonus points in the middle weights. We just lost the close matches and that’s what cost us the dual.”

Harms dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to state ranked No. 4 125-pounder Darius Dutcher. Johnson was nipped by No. 10 ranked Dalton Hemer at 130 pounds, 6-4.

Lucy (103 pounds) and Jameson (112) supplied much needed points with pins over Justin Sadler and Austin Sadler, respectively.

Gutschenritter pinned Pat Billings in their 135-pound match and Maxwell won a 17-1 technical fall over Patrick Patterson at 145 pounds.

“Our season is not based on this one dual,” Dyer said. “It was a good measuring stick on what we want to do and where we need to go. BCIGOA is a tough team and we competed, but we don’t just want to compete, we want to win.”

Lucy, Gutschenritter, Maxwell and heavyweight Colin White all won both of their dual matches.
