The Glenwood boys track team’s four second place finishes and five second place finishes weren’t quite enough as Atlantic ran away with the team title at the Clarinda Cardinal Relays on Thursday.
Atlantic scored 125 points to Harlan’s 101. Glenwood finished fourth at the meet with 94 team points, just two points behind third place Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.
The weather, Glenwood coach Mark Starner, said played a key role in his team's fourth place finish.
“This was an extremely difficult meet weather wise,” said Starner. “The temperature wasn't too cold, but coupled with the rain and wind, it made it difficult on our kids, especially being a three class meet where a lot of athletes end up standing around for awhile
“We told our kids not too stop moving once they were done competing, but as the meet went on, we decided to really cut back on some of our athletes performances in the fear of getting anyone injured. We scratched some athletes from our line up due to this. We had some athletes that were struggling physically from Tuesday's performances and we felt it was best for us as a team if we wanted to try to be prepared for our next meet.”
The Rams got second place finishes at the meet from Bo Darrow (high jump), Jakob Rhodes (3,200-meter run) and Jordan Krug in the 1,600-meters and in the 4x800-meter and shuttle hurdle relays.
Ram distance runner Jonnie Schoening was a dual medal winner placing fifth in the 1,600-meters and fifth in the 800.
In the Class 1A portion of the meet, Treynor edged Fremont-Mills 129 to 102 for the team title.
The Knights had a particularly strong day in the distance events with Tym Wood taking first in the and Manny Salazar fourth in the 3,200-meters. Salazar added a third place finish in the 1,600-meters and Trevan Hetzel a second in the 800.
Brandon Herrick was a dual-medal winner placing fourth in the high jump and second in the 110-meter high hurdles.
