The Glenwood boys track team won 11 events and double-medaled in six to win its fourth straight Ram Relays team title last Tuesday.
Glenwood scored 185 team points to easily out distance second place Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson’s 63.
“It was an outstanding meet for a lot of our athletes,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “For whatever reason, most of the other teams didn’t run a lot of their top athletes full strength, but the way we performed tonight was unbelievable. We ran some unbelievable times for this early in April.”
Starner commended the gold medal times of Eliot Lincoln in the 400-meters, Derek Jones in the 400-meter low hurdles, Kyle Wheeler and Jared Cook in the 800-meters and the shuttle hurdle, the 4x800-meter and the 4x400-meter relays.
Jones broke the sophomore school record with a clocking of 55.56 in the low hurdles dueling with Thomas Jefferson’s Alex Korner, edging him out by .04 of a second.
The 800-meter run was one of several one-two punches on the evening as senior Kyle Wheeler shocked the crowd with a 1:57.1 clocking, which is the fastest in the entire state of Iowa this season. Wheeler also supplied an exciting finish to the meet when he tracked down Matt Smith of Thomas Jefferson over the final 150-meters of the 4x400 to win gold and set a new season-best.
Freshman Jared Cook also set a personal-best and a freshman school record in 800.
Ian Eflin also came up big for the Rams, winning gold in the high jump and the 110-meter high hurdles while also running the anchor leg of the gold-medal winning shuttle hurdle relay.
Johnny Fuller had a typically strong day in the distance events, besting teammate Justin Sunderman by more than a minute in the 3,200-meters. Fuller followed that up with gold in the 1,600-meters.
Cardinal Relays title
The Glenwood boys took home their second straight meet title on Friday with a dominating performance at the Cardinal Relays in Clarinda.
The Rams racked up 154 team points in the win. Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln was second with 111 points and Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson was third with 69.
“This was another outstanding night, even though we were without some of our top varsity performers,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “We had solid performances from Mark Abrams in the 3200-meter run, Derek Jones in the open 400, Ian Eflin and Mitch Bowden in the 110-meter high hurdles, Johnny Fuller in the open 800 and the 4 x 800 Relay, the shuttle hurdle relay, the medley relay team and the 4x400-meter relay team.
In all, Glenwood took home titles in nine events. Eflin won gold in the high jump, 110-meter hurdles and as the anchor leg of the Rams’ shuttle hurdle relay team that set a new meet record in 59.78. Also adding top finishes were Abrams in the 3,200, Jones in the 400-meter dash, Fuller in the 1,600 and as a part of the 4x800-meter relay
