Ram grapplers finish 2-3 at Heelan Invite

The Glenwood wrestling team traveled to Sioux City over the weekend for the Sioux City Heelan Invitational.

The Rams, competing in Pool A, finished with a dual record of 2-3 at the invitational.

Glenwood earned a 73-3 dominating win over host Heelan and the other victory came in a 49-19 decision over Sioux City East. The Rams were defeated by Sibley-Ocheyedan by a criteria decision based on Sibley’s five falls to Glenwood’s four after a 36-36 tie in regulation. The Rams took its other two losses from Logan Magnolia (37-23) and Lincoln (Neb. ) East (42-27).

Glenwood coach Matt Dyer thought his team wrestled “okay” with its slightly altered lineup.

“We had to adjust our line-up and have guys up a weight or two and it’s hard to win duals when you have to do that,” said Dyer. “We need to be more consistent when we wrestle. We can’t go out and have a great match against a great opponent then turn around and lose to someone that is not as good as we are. We have to be consistent.”

After dropping its first dual to Sibley-Ocheyedan based on a disappointing criteria decision that Dyer felt his team should have won, the Rams bounced back in dominating fashion with a 73-3 win over the host Crusaders. Glenwood had 10 falls in the dual and lost just one match.

“We were a little more fired up in this dual,” said Dyer. “Heelan is not as strong as they have been in the past, but we still did a good job getting the falls in a lot of matches.”

After a pair of competitive losses to Logan Magnolia and Lincoln East, Dyer said it was nice to see his team end the long day on strong note with a 49-19 win over East.

“It was good to end the day with a win,” he said. “It was a long day on the kids both mentally and physically. I thought we could have wrestled a little better as a whole today but ending the day with a win was nice.”

Nate Harms (112), Steve Gutschenritter (119), Tyler Maxwell (130) and Colin White (285) won all five of their matches on the day.

With a record of 16-6 in dual this season the Rams are within shot of the school record of 18 dual wins this season.

Rams sixth at Kansas tourney

The Glenwood wrestling team placed sixth out of 32 teams competing at the Bobcat Classic at Basehor-Lindwood, Kan. on Jan. 16-17.

The Rams trailed fifth place Olathe (Kan.) North but just five points. Goddard, Kan. was the tournament champion with 231.5 points.

The tournament brought 16 number one ranked wrestlers, four nationally ranked wrestlers and 64 state ranked wrestlers together for the two day event.

Tyler Maxwell earned a second place finish at 130 pounds for the Rams’ top placewinner. Steve Gutschenritter (119 pounds) and Colin White (285) each earned third place finishes while A.J. Clark (103) was eighth and Joey Bryan (171) was seventh.

Glenwood coach Matt Dyer was pleased with his team’s sixth place performance, despite not have a complete team at the tournament.

“We placed sixth out of 32 teams and we didn’t bring all of our guys,” said Dyer. “Clark did a great job placing as a freshman in this tough tournament. Bryan gutted out a good seventh place finish as well. White and Gutschenritter did a great job coming back and getting third. Both of them had disappointing losses in the semifinals and they had something to prove.

“Maxwell wrestled outstanding for the past three days and made it to the finals. Everyone else was within a round of placing.”
