Rain dampens Rams at Sioux City Relays

In a meet shortened by lightning and potential serious weather approaching, the Glenwood boys track team was able to get through just nine of 15 events at the Sioux City Relays on Saturday at Morningside College.

The Rams got gold medals from Derek Jones in the 400-meter low hurdles and from their shuttle hurdle relay team of Sam Jameson, Dane Kruse, Kyle Bowden and Mitch Bowden.  In all, Glenwood placed in five of the nine events.
“The meet was going to be used as an opportunity to better performances and hopefully qualify for Drake Relays,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “Unfortunately we weren’t able to complete the meet and left some events having to wait for next Tuesday.”
Jones set his fourth straight meet record in the 400-meter low hurdles and tied the junior and school record with a clocking of 53.79. Jones now holds every possible 400-meter low hurdle record in school history; with the remaining record being the senior record.   He tied the previous record held by Craig Brindle (junior record in 1988 and school record in 1989) with a converted time of 53.60.   Jones’ time was fully automatic and converts to a 53.55, which is then rounded up to 53.60.
Jones currently leads the state in all four classes with his meet performance.
The Rams’ shuttle hurdle team beat runner up Sioux City Heelan by :02.2.
“We were hoping to run around 1:00 to have a shot to make a return trip to Drake Relays,” Starner said.
Mark Abrams had another strong day in the 1,600-meters, placing fifth in 4:35.28. Abrams had hoped for a season-best time of 4:32 to qualify for the Drake Relays, but the senior came up short, Starner said.
“This was his second fastest time of the year and he will get one more chance at Lewis Central to qualify,” Starner said. “He’ll have to run a personal best to have a chance.”

Mustang Relays
The Glenwood boys track team took home another team title last Tuesday at the Mustang Relays in Shenandoah.
Glenwood easily out-paced the host Mustangs in the team standings with 162 points to 68.3.
“Another good meet for our team,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “We set several season’s best throughout the meet.  On top of that, we won five out of the six relays and six individuals events.”
Senior Mark Abrams won both the 1,600-meters, the 800-meters anchored the 4 x 800-meter relay that placed first.
Derek Jones continued his string of 400-meter low hurdle individual titles as he set the meet record for the third straight meet and brought home the gold medal.  Jones also anchored the winning 4 x 200-meter  and 4 x 400-meter relay teams.
Mitch Bowden claimed the 110-meter high hurdles and also anchored the winning shuttle hurdle relay team.
