Leon Portrey turned in his resignation last week as head girls basketball coach at Glenwood Community High School.

Portrey, 33-56 in four seasons at the Rams’ helm, will remain as Dean of Students at the high school.

“I think it was just time to move on,” said Portrey, who previously coached the Glenwood boys team from 1993-1996.

The Rams were 12-11 last season, the school’s first winning season since 2000 season, with a 53-30 district victory over Creston, the school’s first district win since the 1994-95 season.

Portrey has recommended his top assistant and junior varsity coach the last three seasons, Barry Loeffelbein as his replacement.

“He’s a very good coach and he knows the girls,” said Portrey. “I think they would give him strong consideration for the job.”
