Quarterback Will Whiton had a hand in all five of Perry’s touchdowns in a 35-7 victory over Glenwood in Class 3A District 1 football on Friday.
The Rams (1-3 overall, 0-2 in the district) had a season-low 216 yards and committed four turnovers in the loss.
“We didn’t play as well as I think we are capable against Perry, but I am confident we can rebound and play very well this week and for the rest of the season,” said Glenwood coach Cory Faust.
Whiton, the Bluejays’ sophomore quarterback was 7-for-15 passing for 164 yards and three touchdowns and added 186 yards and two more TDs on 24 carries. Whiton also picked off two passes and had two tackles on defense.
The Rams’ finished with 125 yards on the ground, 91 through the air. Glenwood quarterback Corey Bertini was 7-for-18 for 81 yards passing and three interceptions.
“I was proud of the way most of our guys played hard throughout the game, even when things weren’t going our way,” Faust said. “We as coaches have to coach them better, we will move some players around to maximize their talents, and some of the players are going to have to play with more intensity.”
Faust said a bright spot for his team was its special team’s play. Senior Mitch Bowden dashed 93 yards for a touchdown on a kick-off return for the Rams’ only score.
“The kickoff return was a great play by him, but the blocking was also very good,” Faust said. “Sam Jameson’s block ultimately enabled it to go the distance.
The Rams travel to Harlan on Friday for a district game. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
