Rachel Tucker and Grace Newman became just the third Glenwood doubles team to qualify for state after finishing second at the Class 1A, Region 2 meet in Red Oak on Thursday.

In all, the Glenwood girls tennis team had three doubles teams reach the semifinals with Tucker and Newman reaching the finals. Tucker and Newman will head to the state championships in two weeks at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.
Tucker and Newman beat Red Oak's Grace Blomstedt and Zoey Baker in the semifinals to reach the finals where top seeded Kimberly Graf and Mackenzie Johnson of Shenandoah waited. Tucker and Newman battled, said coach Jim Tucker, but the duo of Johnson and Graf, a talented foreign exchange student from Switzerland, won the match 6-3, 6-3. The top two teams at districts advance to state.
Brittney Rodgers and Montana Crow also reached the semifinals but were ousted by Graf and Johnson, preventing an all-Glenwood final.
Marely Chavez had the most surprising tourney, said Tucker, as she shocked the district finishing in fourth place in the singles division after entering as Glenwood’s No. 5 singles player.  Chavez, who played five matches on Thursday, lost to eventual champion Kate Walker of Red Oak.
The Rams finish the regular season with a record of 11-3. The 11 wins are a  school record.
