Mayor Administers Oath Of Office

The Glenwood City Council has approved Mayor Dyle Downing's recommendation to name Lt. Mike Mercer as Glenwood’s interim chief of police.

City council members gave their approval to Downing’s recommendation at City Hall Tuesday night during their regular meeting. Mercer will serve as the interim chief for the next six months at an annual salary of $50,500.

Mercer will assume his new leadership duties at the police department for retiring chief John O’Connor on Aug. 27, although he was administered his oath of office by Mayor Downing during Tuesday's meeting.

Mercer, 44, is a veteran law enforcement officer, having served 12 years as a Mills County Sheriff’s deputy and the past eight years as a lieutenant for the Glenwood Police Department.

Mercer is a graduate of Nishna Valley High School and owns a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

O’Connor’s final day on the job will be Aug. 26.
