Malcom Wins Title, Rams 3rd At Hawkeye 10 Conference Wrestling Tourney

-A A +A

DENISON - One individual champion was crowned as the Glenwood Rams finished third at Saturday’s Hawkeye 10 wrestling tournament in Denison.

Matt Malcom (132 pounds) was the top individual champion for Glenwood. Malcom defeated Spencer Wray of Creston Orient-Macksburg in the first period via pinfall. It’s the first conference championship for Malcom, who finished fourth at 120 pounds last season.

“He did really good; 132 is a really tough weight class coming into today and Matt Malcom was very excited about it and he has that attitude that he wants the best and he wants to beat the best,” Glenwood wrestling coach Brad Asche said.

To reach the championship, Malcom defeated Marshal McDermott of Atlantic in the quarterfinals, as well as Alexander Schmitz of Kuemper Catholic in the semifinals.

“That’s a big confidence booster going into the end of the season for him,” Asche said about Malcom.

Malcom was the only Glenwood wrestler to appear in a championship match at the tournament.

Four Glenwood wrestlers finished third, including Chase Evans at 138 pounds. It was Evans’ first appearance at the tournament since returning from an injury. Evans defeated Mason Heredia-Pugh of Lewis Central by first-period pin to clinch third.

AJ Slaughter (120) also placed third when he won the consolation match against Alec Selberg of Red Oak via a third-period pin.

At 126 pounds, Cole Peckham won a 5-0 decision against Jordan Bailey of Lewis Central to finish third. Peckham’s lone loss during the tournament was to Blake Luna in the semifinals.

Josh Clark also took home third from the Hawkeye 10 tournament, winning the third place match (160) over Tayler Pettit of Creston-Orient Macksburg. Clark won the Hawkeye 10 championship (152), last season.

Zach Haggstrom (170) and Collin Ransom (285) both finished fourth in their respective brackets. Haggstrom lost via injury default to Dustin Swindler of Clarinda in the third place match. Ransom meanwhile lost via a third period pinfall to Jezidiah Phippen of Atlantic.

Hunter Ackerson (113) and Andrew Tilley (145) both finished fifth at the Hawkeye 10 tournament. Ackerson defeated Brandon Trevino of Harlan via a 13-6 decision. Tilley meanwhile defeated Cory Lear of Lewis Central by a third period pinfall.

Drayton Slaughter (220) of Glenwood took sixth when he lost to Brook Stephens by second -period fall.

Glenwood had a team score of 178 points, finishing behind Creston-Orient Macksburg and Clarinda. The Rams finished second, last year.

The focus now is on the district tournament, which won’t be until Feb. 15 in Glenwood.

“We have a couple of weeks and they’re doing a really good job of battling and I think they’re learning still,” Asche said. “Some are learning they need to be in better shape before they get to districts and the state tournament. Some of them might need to work on technical stuff. I think we did a really good job today as a team and they did work hard.”
