The Glenwood boys track team opened the outdoor season by winning the team title at the Wolverine Relays at Olsen Stadium in Sioux City Saturday.
The Rams’ edged Brandon Valley, S.D. 118.5 to 113 points in the team standings to earn their first team title of the season.
“It was a great way to start our outdoor season,” Glenwood coach Mark Starner said. “We were a little short handed due to the meet being a late addition to our schedule. We had to go without some of our varsity athletes due to conflicts. With that said, it allowed some of our younger athletes an opportunity to compete.”
In all, Glenwood got individual gold medal performances from Dane Kruse in 110-meter hurdles, James Fuller in the 400-meters and Brady Wheeler in the 400-meter hurdles.
Fuller fought off a late kick by Cam Holmes from Brandon Valley for his gold in 49.65, which is currently the fastest 400 in the state through the early part of the season.
Wheeler made his debut in the 400 lows with a meet-best 57.02.
“He thought about running them in the pre-season and we couldn’t think of a reason why he shouldn’t,” Starner said. “And with very little practice, he ran an outstanding time. He’s a competitor and we are confident that his time will drop the more he runs the event.”
The Rams added golds in the 4x200, 4x400, distance medley and shuttle hurdle relays.
“The medley and 4 x 400 relays will be a staple for our team this year and this meet was no different,” Starner said.
The Rams 4x100-meter and 4x800-meter relay teams both place second.

Rams win three
golds at Buena Vista
The Glenwood track team claimed gold medals in three events at the Buena Vista Indoor Elite Meet in Storm Lake on March 21.
The Rams earned first place medals in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400-meter relays and Dane Kruse had the top time in the 60-meter high hurdles. Glenwood added a third place in the distance medley relay, a fourth place showing from Josh Lee in the 60-meter dash, a fifth place medal from Mavrick Decker in the 400-meter dash and a fifth place showing from Spencer Smith in the high jump.
“We took more athletes to this meet to give kids a chance to compete,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “Had a very strong showing across the board. Still have a lot of work to do as we prepare for our outdoor schedule, but helped solidify a couple areas of concern.”

Rams open season at Iowa State Indoors
The Glenwood boys track team opened its season on March 18 at the Iowa State Indoor Classic in Ames.
The Rams’ medley relay (third place) and the 4x400-meter relay (third place) were Glenwood’s highest finishers of the night. Strong relay legs by Brady Wheeler and James Fuller in both races contributed to the success, said Glenwood coach March Starner.
“Both were great indoor times and have the potential to be a Drake Relays qualifying time,” Starner said.
Dane Kruse also came away with a top 10 finish in both the 60-meter high hurdles and the high jump, placing ninth and seventh respectively.
“We went into the meet a little short-handed. Due to minor injuries. We didn’t want to risk further injuries on an indoor track. Also ran some athletes short on events not wanting to overdo it,” Starner said.
