In its second straight indoor meet to open the season, the Glenwood boys track team earned five gold medals at the Wayne State (Neb.) University Indoors on March 19.

The Rams opened their season on March 15 at the Iowa State Indoors.
“Being our second indoor meet of the week, we decided to give a lot of our athletes that ran at Iowa State a break and just run them in one event,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “This also allowed us to get more times on some of our other athletes that haven't had a chance to run yet this year.”
Earning gold medals for Glenwood were Cole Darrow in the long jump, Derek Jones in the high jump, Michael Lawler in the 60-meter high hurdles, Johnny Fuller in the 3200-meters and the 4 x 400-meter relay team of Eliot Lincoln, Derek Jones, Taylor Kaufman and Kyle Wheeler.

Fuller set a new course record in the 3,200 with a time of 9:58.32 and the 4 x 400 relay team broke the record set by last year's Glenwood team by four seconds.
“We had some kids step up today and compete in spots that weren't penciled in to compete this weekend,” said Starner. “We got a chance to evaluate a lot of our kids on a pretty rough 160-meter track. The curves were very tight. That really affected the times, but what we liked from our athletes was that they competed.
“You can throw out the times for the most part, because they really won’t indicate a true time, however, some of our times clocked today were very impressive for this length of track.”

Rams kick off season at Iowa State
The Glenwood boys track team kicked off its 2011 season with a strong showing at the Iowa State Indoors on March 15 at Iowa State University in Ames.
“Our main focus was to run some events pretty tough to see how close we could get events to Drake qualifying standards and what we found out was that we were able to run some very good times,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner.
The Rams' 4 x 800-meter relay team of Eliot Lincoln, Mark Abrams, Jordan Krug and Kyle Wheeler posted a blistering 8:11.62 to win top honors in the event. The Rams’ time was the second fastest clocking from a Glenwood team in over nine years and bested the defending Class 3A state champion Knoxville team, which returned three runners off last year's relay, by more than six seconds.
Ian Eflin and Derek Jones both added new personal bests in the high jump. Eflin claimed fourth place overall and potentially making the traditional Drake Relays cut off for the event with his 6-foot, 4 inch leap.
Johnny Fuller ran a pair of solid, 1,600's and 3,200's that most likely notched a Drake Relay invitation in both, said Starner. Fuller finished second in both races behind Kevin Lewis of Ottumwa.
The 1600-meter medley relay team of Cole Darrow, Taylor Kaufman, Lincoln, Wheeler placed sixth in 3:42.72.
“All of these performances were outstanding for the first meet out,” said Starner. “But we want our kids to understand that it is 'just a start.' We have a long way to go until May. We hope to continue to improve and bring a lot of our young athletes along.”
“We have one more indoor meet to go and then we'll have some time to prepare for the start of our outdoor season. Once the outdoor season starts, it goes by pretty fast.”
